Is it possible for the graphics part of a chipset to fail, leaving the rest of the chipset working flawlessly?

Integrated graphics failing

Just I've built a system using the Pentium D 805 and 945G chipset. When using the onboard graphics, the system more often than not wont even POST (monitor remains in standby), and when it does occassionally work, it'll freeze, crash or send the monitor into standby mode at any random time. I tried my own X800XL in the PCI-E slot and it works flawlessly.
