INTEL 3820 X79 BASED CPU NOW IN STOCK!!

I don't agree.

The performance increase from Sandy Bridge to Ivy Bridge doesn't seem to be huge.

By the time you've reached the point where an i5-2500K starts to struggle the Ivy Bridge equivalent will be pretty much there as well.

I agree, where X79 can be helped along by throwing more cores at it :p

the only disadvantages - Isee anyway are not chipset related but future CPU related:

(1) If the 1155 Ivys (out in a few months) are immense >5.0 gig overclockers and are quitte a bit faster clock to clock as well ... and I think the Ivy-Es arenn't out till 2013 ....

(2) If there is no affordable Ivy-E released ...

I was leaning towards a 3820 + 2011 - but I'm thinking now that more immediate future proof is a Gen3 Z68 chipset

Nah. Z77 chipset is where future proof is. :p

You don't know this though? And by all accounts the IB will be significantly better for the overclockers! But the majority of threads on here are from people with old tech asking if they should upgrade now or wait, if you knew that the new tech was a month away, would you not wait??

I didn't say it wasn't worth waiting.

What I said was that by the time Sandy Bridge has had its day then the equivalent Ivy Bridge processor will be in the same boat, or very near to it.

True that!

In which case, it would be a better upgrade to go for the X79 2011 socket, that will outlast the IB, with IB-E as an upgrade option! As Edgedemon suggested!

And the OP
