INTEL 3820 X79 BASED CPU NOW IN STOCK!!

outlast a z68 chipset yes - agreed - faster than a z68 + cheap Ivybridge ?

not sure - you could almost buy a Z68 + 2500k now, sell the 2500k for 100 when Ivybridge comes out, buy an Ivybridge - and still be around same price as a 2011 + 3820 ?

You can, but Ivybridge is the end of the current Intel cycle with Haswell set to be the begining of a new one, so to upgrade from Ivy will be a new cpu and mobo

SB-E is the begining of Intels enthusiast tick/tock cycle, so you will be buying into the start of a new platform that will see you through Ivybridge-E as well.
It is even better value seing as IB-E has been delayed to 2013, so extending the life of the enthusiast platform

Ivybridge vanilla = SB vanilla since it has same clocks/cache. I don't know why you n00bs seem to think its going to be the best thing in the world.

This chip is already at £230 and seems to be lowering by the day so it seems a steal to me :)

I may get it, but tbh my Phenom II seems just fine :)

depends on how good they clock - if they're all good for 5gig + at <1.3V - then even if same as SB otherwise they'll be amazing chips :)

big if though ...

because it's on a 22nm process, 65W TDP.

Look at the difference between Nehalem (45nm) which maxed out at about 4ghz on average compared to Sandy Bridge (32nm) which does about 4.6ghz on average as well as being clock for clock faster.

If you aren't overclocking then of course the difference won't be massive due to similar specification, but IB should be an overclockers dream.

mmm an Asus X79 + 3820 is really really tempting me.... what to do- what to do ...lol

my previous Asus P5B Deluxe is still (!!) going strong, I've had it for around 5 years - amazing

I agree with the above. However the only thing that stopped me buying was the higher power consumption with this cpu, but then thats to be expected with 2011 pins over 1155 pins and all the extra lanes etc.
Having said the above i still have a nagging voice in the back of my head telling me to look at this again rather than Ivy B. I will never use all that memory bandwidth it offers and coupled with the power consumption numbers im shying away.

Remember tht if you overclock SB, then the chances are you will be pushing 1.4V through the cpu so the difference will not be that much..
Go for the best you can afford and make it last
I think IB is delayed to Jun accordeing to techpowerup?

Exactly what I thought. The difference can't be huge if using for a few hours a day maximum (that's me...). Still have the option to upgrade to IB-2011 next year then.

Not sure I can be doing waiting until June for IB, at that rate it will never get built.

Any one any idea if Ocuk will sell oem 3820 chips? Some retailers are stocking them.

Ivy B in June??? Thought it was April?

Why do people worry about (low) power consumption? This is an enthusiast site is it not?

If Jezza liked PCs he would get a quad socket 3960xxx (which as we all know would use at least 3000w when overclocked to 7ghz under nuclear phase cooling)

Edit:

That's without the 16 GPUS

To be fair enthusiasts come in many forms. For instance undervolting is a big thing too. My next system is going to be watercooled and I'm looking to get a good overclock out of whatever processor I decide to use. but if the power draw on the system increases exponentially for just a modest increase in clock. I'll not cross that line. 1 of the reason Bulldozer was hideous to many was the insane draw on power for little gain over phenom 2.
