Intel 4 Core or AMD 8 Core?

Keep in mind whether his existing cooler will work on AM3+. If not then he would need to budget for a new one which would take it more over budget.

Without getting too technical, can anyone tell me why Intel's 4 Core CPUs are better than AMD's 8 core CPUs?

Let's just say for the sake of it, both CPUs run at the same speed. Then think of the Intel core as a bus, and the AMD core as a car. What carries more people per trip? So the Intel offers more performance per clock.

And then for gaming, most older games only effectively use two cores, so the rest of the cores on the CPU will be doing nothing. However, newer games are taking advantage of more cores, but who knows how that will work out in the future...

Basically, for gaming, what matters more (at the moment) is core performance instead of many cores.

The i5 may well perform better in order or poorly threaded games However as games seem to finally be starting to move towards using more and more cores the 8 core or thread cpu will shine more.

There will be little between them going forward apart from that one game out of a hundred that will absolutely fly (if you listen the the local forum factoids).

The reality is that the FX83 are absolutely fine and improving all the time with better supported apps.
