INTEL 478 3GHz TEMPERATURE RISING

Can anyone help me? I have a problem with the temperature rising on the Intel P478 3GHz Bus 800. I have had this processor for 2 years and the temperature is going from 65 C going over 70 and reaching 80 C and in some cases I have had to shut down my system. I replaced the heatsink with a brand new fan and it is still doing the same. Even when you check the PC Health on the CMOS the temperature is still showing the same. I have updated the Motherboard BIOS and still nothing has changed. (Motherboard DFI Infinity 865pe)

Do you think the processor is on it's way out? In the past it has stayed under 65 C even though I had been on my system for 8 or 9hours.

Fortunately, I had a 2A GHz Intel Pentium which I bought before I upgraded to 3GHz. I have put my system back on the 2A and the temperature has gone right down to 41 C.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Thanks for your quick reply.

I have 4Fans in my full tower. I have two in the front and two at the back.
So I think the ventilation is good.

I clean my system once a month with an air duster.

What coolers are you using, used a decent ammount of thermal paste ie. not too much and not too few, is the cpu still gettign stock volts, recheck if something stupid caused it to get more as 1.4 volts?
Reseat the cooler also...

My old p4 3.4 ghz scott @ 4ghz, 1.5 volts used to be @ 72C full load with a zalman alcu 7000, and 55 C max on load on stock speeds & volts...

ouch, my C2D is about 55-60 degrees at full load overclocked! . glad I never owned a prescott.

I agree. sounds like your voltage is crazy or sumthin. check your motherboard bios settings. also check if there are any leaky capacitors on your motherboard as there can be some weird symptoms, such as this, when its about to die.

Prescotts are incredibly toasty chips. I have a s478 p4 3.0e ghz in an intel d865gbf mobo in the kids playroom. It was my old system and had uber cooling with a superflower heatsink and a wind tunnel of a case yet still would climb from 38c idle to 72c+ under heavy load. Short of watercooling there's not much else you could do to keep temps down.
Intels answer was to keep changing the cpu temp value that their software would sound an alert at. Currently it's supposedly not a problem until 75c.
Get the vacuum and make sure all the vent holes at the rear of the case are clear, tidy up cables. Use a dremel or something similar to cut a hole in the side of the case and fit a 120mm fan above the processor so as air is being directed at it.
Remember temps are going to get higher with the summer here so things will be hotter now than they were a few months back.

Thanks Gents for all your help. I've tried everything and nothing happened and I did use a good heatsink with a good fan. I think something is wrong with the processor because it doesn't happen when I put the 2GHz Northwood one back. I have sent an email to Intel to ask for their advice and hopefully I could get a replacement as there is 3 years warranty.

They were nicknamed pres-hot for a reason ;)

Might want to change the cooler, or give your current one a serious cleaning, matched with a rice sized blob of as5/ceramique and you should be ok.

Yeah this isn't unusual with the prescotts - make sure you apply a thin layer of a good thermal paste - clean all the dust out, etc. but even then the prescott will reach 65C fully loaded under normal operation - but its rated for operation upto I think 71C...

You might want to try one of those cheap PCI slot extractor fans* - they aren't usually upto much but I put one in the slot nearest the CPU in an old P4 system as a last desperate measure and found the CPU temp under max load stayed below 60C (when it was hitting upto 80C before).

Just to let you know guys that I have been in touch with Intel in the UK and they are supposed to let me know within 75hours whether I can have a replacement, due to the 3 years guarantee.
