Intel 710 Series?

Will OcUK stock any of these, just as they ever sold X25-E before?

Any estimated price or ETA?

I'm looking forward to upgrade my ThinkPad X220 with a reliable SSD, but obviously the Intel 320 Series is out of consideration due to the 8MB bug. I don't like other controllers beside Intel, as they have stuttering problems.

Troll post?

The 8MB bug isn't as widespread as you think, it's very unlikely that it will effect you. In any case the drive is covered under warranty and if you don't have a sensible backup policy by now you're just asking for trouble. No component will be guaranteed as 100% perfect.

Also, it's been at least 2 years since we had controllers with stuttering issues from any of the big brands.

I'll also note that unless you're running an enterprise level database 24/7 from your laptop, you probably don't need an SLC drive.

I totally have no idea how my post can troll you.

The 8MB bug is indeed very serious - someone just mentioned that he bought over 600 samples for his company and there has been 7 dead over the past 3 months. That's more than 1% failure rate over 3 months! It can easily pass 4% AFR in such speed. It reminds me the Seagate incidence a couple of years ago.

Even if I run a daily backup, I still risk losing my work progress for up to 9 hours in worst case, if I spend 25 minutes (for 300GB) every day to backup the entire disk image which quickly wears out the SSD. This is not tolerable. my data is a lot more expensive than the laptop or the SSD. Once it's bugged, there is hardly any way to recover the data. (though it would be possible to recover data on mechanical HDD much easier)

Forgive my ignorance, but I have hardly heard about Intel controller having any stuttering / freezing issues in the past few years. I have also been using an Intel X25-E 64G in my laptop ever since it was sold by OcUK. Now I just need a larger one, what's the problem? By the way, the 710 series is not SLC, but I want it for Intel's reaction towards bugs occured in their Enterprise product lines. (They ignore the 8MB bug for too long merely because it's a problem for consumer level products)

Please forgive me if I was wrong, just read to my early morning eyes as a fairly ignorant post posted in a confrontational style, typical of people trolling.

On the subject of backups, firstly reads from the SSD do not cause any wear. It is only rewriting that uses erase cycles. Secondly there are many backup solutions, such as Acronis, which work Incrementally - so they only need to back up changes made since the last backup. This cuts the amount of data right down to a few hundred MB most days which takes seconds on a fast network. You could set incremental backups every hour if you wanted, the more frequently you take them, the less time each one takes. SSD's are perfectly suited to perform backups without interupting your workflow.
If you don't want to use Acronis, I believe the built in Windows 7 Backup also works incrementally.

If the data is so valuable that you can't afford to lose even an hours worth, there are also free products like Dropbox or Mozy which you can use to constantly keep your documents folders syncronised to encrypted online cloud storage.

I don't think the AFR on the 320 series will be anywhere near 4%, but there'll never be any way to know. If your heart is set on the 710 series though, I suggest you use the webnote system to ask the OCUK staff directly.

Thank you for your suggestions on backup solutions, I'll definitely give them a try!

Asking about new products through the webnote system doesn't seem helpful. Tried many times on different products. I only received exactly the same reply: "Thanks for the web note. Unfortunately we do not stock this item."

Instead, posting here might eventually draw the attention of someone.

we will of course stock any prominent intel releases.
However what they may be or any ETA is entirely down to the manufacturer as is always the case with any PC hardware.

I suggest keeping a keen eye on the news section of our website and forums for info :)
