However neither is where you should be looking as both are now history with very questionable security (to say the least) and being now somewhat some distance from the performance leadership side of things. All you need to know now is that it looks like intel no longer holds the performance/value or ... er anything crown. Spending hundreds on upgrading to a dead 6 or 8 core platform is not a good idea.

AMD's 3800X offers similar performance to the 9700K for the same price.

An 8c/8t CPU will be significant upgrade over a 4c/8t CPU. It will also beat a 6c/12t CPU in most tasks.
Real physical cores beat logical threads in everything but some rendering tasks.

I doubt the 9700k will see what direction the 16 thread 3800 goes once all the dust settles.

An 8 core vs 8 thread cpu wont be a massive upgrade imho, not for the cash required - very poor vfm on that.

4 cores to 8 cores is a 100% increase in performance. 8c/16t vs 8c/8t will only offer a 20% increase in some duties.

yes 4 to 8 real cores is, the 9700 does not have HT though so its 8 threads to 8 real cores so not 100%

Either way its crap compared to zen2

Depends on if the task benefits from hyperthreading.

Zen2 high end parts are good and offer something new, but mid range are not significantly better than Intel’s offerings. At least there will be some decent motherboards for Zen2 rather than the usual budget crap AMD owners have to settle with.

or wait and see in July for 3800x , boards have newer AX wifi standard - just need a router/model that uses it too lol

I have a 8700 and a Z370 board, I bought this in Nov/Dec 2017. If I was buying today I would be waiting for Ryzen 3 and seeing what it offers.
