Intel B560 is a Disaster

Thats pretty bad, and thanks as I was looking at doing a cheap n cheerful 11400f build!
Maybe £128 Z590 is the answer, or not?

Dont want to drag this off topic but check Hardware's Unboxed Affordable Intel z590 VRM Thermal Test the Phantom gaming is 4 is one of the the worst z590 board one can buy. It's a cheep board for a reason.

What a surprise Asrock have one of the if not the worst b560 boards also as shown in the video in the OP.

Yes, it does look suspiciously cheap! Prefer not to spend more than £150 cpu really. Maybe Asus Prime a safe bet?

Sounds like the issue is more software side with the boards bios locking CPUs to the base spec, in this case to 65w TDP.

A similar thing would happen on AMD boards if they came with core performance boost off by default.

I can't say as I was only looking at getting a z590 and a cheep 6/8 core as a side grade from my 8700K as I thought the cost to do so wasn't going to be that much but you can get cheep 10 series cpus but the motherboards are expensive and the cheeper ones are abit hit and miss.

I got an upgrade itch atm but want to hold out for Alderlake or if theres a Zen3+ cpu.

The B560 looks like an absolute mess!

The title is clickbait. The more expensive B560 motherboards break official specs by configuring TDP past spec. This has been done for years. It used to be called MCE. The cheaper motherboards will stick to spec unless you manually change settings.

Also if you look at the results of the £110 B560 PRO4 with a Core i7 11700 with MCE on,it basically only boosts 100MHZ less than the B560 Tomahawk.

They also seemingly don't include the Core i5 11400 with the TDP unlocked either so I suspect it's fine.

Also as Hardware Unboxed showed with their sub £110 B550 motherboards, that like that cheaper B560 motherboards the puny heatsinks lead to throttling too.

Even Optimum Tech pointed this out yonks ago with less fanfare. Also even one of the recommended B560 motherboards Hardware Unboxed suggested was the Gigabyte B560M Aorus Pro which is £125.

What a surprise Asrock have one of the if not the worst b560 boards also as shown in the video in the OP.

Its boosting 100MHZ less under heavy load than a B560 Tomahawk with a Core i7 11700. This is more to do with how the motherboards are configured at stock.

The other two have puny heatsinks and if you look at their review of the B550 motherboards there were issues with the cheaper ones too.

Plus they said the Gigabyte B560M Aorus Pro was decent. That costs £125 to £150:

Its varies in price,so it can be had cheaper,ie,as low as £125.

Yep thanks for clearing that up but thinking back when picking up a board for my 8700K I had to chose a board that was good enough that I could overclock and maybe put a 9900K overclocked in it without it causing any problems as some of the cheeper z370 boards had poor power delivery/VRM's/cooling.

There was also a lot of talk about the b450 and x470? being in a simillar situation with certain boards being recommended as well.

It seems that caution is needed when looking at the cheepest B/X/Z boards as motherboards makers seem ok selling poor/cheep motherboards as I would be annoyed if I had a low/mid range chip and then decided to put the best chip in my motherboard and run into problems just to be told by the internet that oh your motherboard is trash, you need a better one.

I tend to look at the heatsinking - decently finned heatsinks will mean the heat can be moved off the VRM better, even if the VRM is not as overbuilt as competiting motherboards.

MSI torpedo is about £135 if you take into account the msi cashback offer, £20 back if you buy in same transaction as 11400/f, have to buy during may though. Details are on msi uk site. Torpedo is apparently just the tomahawk (even share a manual), except dual ethernet instead of ethernet + wifi and bluetooth.

Ok thanks! Another MSI deal ... got my Unify/10850k in the last one, it all helps ;)

I got the MSI torpedo for only £110 a few weeks ago. Think it was a pricing error as it’s £170 now on the same site!

anyway, seems like a very good board paired with my 11700 and has none of these issues (maintains max all core clocks without any tinkering, goes up to circa 150w). It’s the same board basically as the tomahawk I think but has dual lan ports which I wanted, rather than built in WiFi.

I too think the hu video is a bit click baity. A lot of the boards will likely be ok if you spend a few mins tinkering with settings.

It would have been better presented as an informative video showing what settings need to be changed to unlock the TDP on budget boards which seem to have these turned off by default rather than the "OMG your losing 30% performance" as its only a setting just like XMP which most users are capable of entering the bios and enabling so long as they know about it.

All of the B560 boards went up a great deal in price after the first 7-10 days of availability.

Agree, I've used loads of the MSI B560 Pro VDH (Wi-Fi) boards, with a £20-30 tower air cooler, not seen any issues with throttling, and hitting max speed boost, it just seems like a bit of a whinge.

Asrock products are crap and always have been

without even listening to the video, I looked at the graphs at the start and then the ones at the end straight away thought, why did they make this video?the entire video is clickbait

The title makes it sound like you will lose 30% performance of you buy the wrong b560 board but then at the end of the video they show that's actually not the case
