Intel Core 2 Duo E6420 CPU,

I have just bought the above cpu for cheap and want to know can it be over clock much from 2.13 on the stock fan that is supplied? and if i got another fan for it what can they be overclock safely to.

In the ASUS P5N-E SLi thread in motherboards Matthew2456 has his running at 3.2GHz pretty much straight away, so it looks like they clock quite well.

A good CPU cooler is always a good idea, but you should be able to do better (maybe 2.8GHz) on the stock cooler.

What is the rest of your rig like?

Not too sure about that mobo but that may limit your overclock, will wait for others to confirm or shoot me down :)

ive already posted my result, im sitting at 3.2 at 1.4v and stable tat shows temps as idle around 30 and full load around 44 thats using a ds3p board and noctua hsf.

AC Freezer 7 Pro, just be careful to read the instructions when you fit it as otherwise you'll be complaining for a very long time (like Big.Wayne :p ).

I've just fitted one of these and am pretty much completely new to building a full PC. I did read the instructions (many times) but your post has made me wonder what the problem Big.Wayne had. Be good to know just to make sure I haven't done the same.

(Edit) Sorry sensible use of the search facility has found the post and problem - I didnt realise I could search by username as well.

Haha very funny! :)

I'm not sure what the deal with that AC-Freezer 7 Pro was? I did read the instructions and spent far too many hours fitting/refitting it, even took the motherboard out the case so I could inspect under the board to see if the pegs were properly through the board, and they were (was expecting to see maybe one black peg missing but no, all present and accounted for).

I took it back to the store and the manager kindly let me swap it for an AMD version (I had bought the Ultra-120 by then so no need for another LGA775 cooler). The AMD version promptly 'snapped' while I was installing it

I took that back to the shop and showed them, the manager laughed and told me to lay off the steroids?, lol gave me a full refund.

If you have never used a third party heatsink before I can see how the Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro has some appeal, some 'Wow' factor but once you spend a bit more and get a 'decent' heatsink you will understand why the ACf7Pro leaves a lot to be desired.

COuld have been a one-off but I just don't have that much spare time to waste hours trying to get something working.

I definitely don't want to turn this into a is it/isn't it but there has to be some reason why lots of users are very happy with their AC Freezers and yet a significant proportion aren't. I've been doing some work with company that does IT Angel type work and the number of incorrectly fitted S775 CPU coolers I have seen is unbelieveable. It may not have been the case for Big.Wayne, but I definitely think that a sizeable proportion of the people with AC Freezer 7 issues haven't fitted it properly either by not clicking hard enough or by scraping the thick layer of MX-1 TIM off the bottom thinking a thin layer is better.

I also reckon that any cheaply made component will have more manufacturing weaknesses than an expensive one and the failure rate on AC Freezers is probably higher than anyone realises - if it doesn't work well, the end-user just slags off the cooler. They don't think maybe the pipes were never filled properly or there are small holes so the vapour/liquid transition doesn't happen correctly. They almost never take/send it back so we never know.

Anyway - that's the last I'll say on the matter as I know that Big.Wayne and I have had radically different experiences with that cooler. I did think it was right that I mentioned some well respected people (and Big.Wayne :p ) on these boards have not had a happy time with their AC Freezer 7 Pro's while others have.

What I think we do both agree on is that our current favourite air cooler is the Thermalright Ultra-120 with a good quiet fan (but I suspect that's possibly too expensive for you at £45 once the fan is bought as well)

failed orthos after 2hours but think my NB is overheating as it will only do around 15mins without a fan on it.

ordered a noctua NB heatsink today, should be here tomorrow

Any chance of some actual screen shots...

Posting clocks is easy.

Actual proof would be nice. :)

I have nothing to gain by making it up?

I actually want some help from people and not here boasting about how far i've turned up some numbers

Thats fine,

press print screen then and show us cpuz, speedfan, tat, orthos etc...

Its no biggy.

This is a new chip and I want to see evidence please.

It's not a case of making it up but rather a case of the user may be 'mistaken' or hasn't done sufficient stability testing. Some people post results in a competitive fashion, some others are 'blogging' their progress and allowing other to peek in on their coursework/technical notes.

Its doesn't take long (once u get the hang of it) to produce screenies and get them posted up, then there can be no question . . . as they say a picture paints a thousand words! :)
