Hi all,

Are the Core processors with 1mb of L2 cache severly handcaped?
Am looking at a computer with the T2080 1.73mhz 1mb L2 cache 533mhz....
I know its the old "core duo" chip rebadged called a "Pentium Duel core"but with half the cache Are they any good?

No it doesn't make a huge difference, even the 512kb per core chips in the E21x0 range still perform well.

T2080 cannot be compared with a E21x0. Its based on the 32bit 'Core' architecture which is virtually nothing more than a renamed Pentium-M.

Ok, its not a bad chip, but its 32 bit, has an IPC of 3 (compared to core2's 4 with occasionally 5), still breaks SSE 128 bit instructions into a pair of 64bit instructions, etc etc etc.

Clock for clock its around 20% slower than a Core 2 Duo with the same sized cache.

Its smaller cache isnt a major problem. But this chip is looking back to the past, it has no ability to look forward. It cannot run 64bit vista for example. Contrary to what many people think, its not a 'laptop' chip. Its a very low budget 'Pentium' part. Pretty much phased out now that the Pentium E21xx's are out.
