Intel Core i7 4790 (Haswell Refresh) CPU and Z97 Performance Preview

That chart is rubbish, my i4770k idles around 32c.

Obviously depends on the ambient temperature and the cooler used.

If they used the same cooler and the same ambient temperature to test, then the chart is accurate and not rubbish.

I guess a lot of 4770k owners will get very defensive in the coming weeks, especially if the 4790K proves to clock well :P

FX8150, idles at 7C? are they in a chiller?

Silly chart to include that. Fx chip sensors are off at lower temps, supposedly as it approaches its throttling temperature it becomes far more accurate. In terms of comfortable recommended temp for an overclock under load, for extended periods of time, people aim to keep it under 65.

I know a lot of people don't even like the Haswell refresh but i gotta admit, ASUS dropping the ****-yellow from their channel boards is a god send!

Suprised that none commented on this yet:

10°C cooler with a 100Mhz greater clock at stock - seems to imply that even the non K version has better thermal design?

Imagine the temperature of the K version!

I don't think I'd conclude that from this chart at all. My 4770k idles at 24C in a room kept at 21C ambient with an H80i. I'd imagine the vast majority of 4770k owners find their idles are not 45C. I'd be uncomfortable with that in a laptop, let alone a desktop. Lots more testing (and overclocking) needed when these come out.

As I already mentioned, it should be highly obvious, even to a small child, that the temperatures listed on that chart depend upon the cooler setup used and the ambient temperature in the room.

Just because your CPU runs at 24C doesn't mean that every single 4770K runs at the same temperature, I hope you understand this...

Idle and load temperates etc depend highly upon the ambient temperature of the room and upon the cooler used.

As I said already in my previous post, they used the same heatsinkfan for each CPU test, same ambient temperature of the room etc, so these results shouldn't be dismissed. It will be interesting when we get more reviews though.

I'm looking forward to seeing the temperatures of the 'K' version of the 4790K - it has improved thermal construction and is designed for overclocking - imagine the overclocking potential and the temperatures!

Guru3d tried to OC the 4790 with upping BCLK and it failed.

We tried and failed miserably, we had such a hard time overclocking the CPU that a little 10% bump was not possible, we gave up. The non-K models do not have an unlocked multiplier. Meaning the turbo 'boost' multiplier is locked at a maximu of 40. As such you will have to adjust the BLCK frequency (100 MHz = default), but even increasing that one 10% to 110 MHz resulted in a non posting system and thus a failed overclock. So if you like to enjoy the experience of tweaking and overclocking, you might want to put this purchase on a hold and wait for the K model 4790K, and that we need to talk about in a separate paragraph.
