You can always do things like cram more transistors in to help with branch prediction, that's probably where most of the tiny gains from the last few generations came from.

No no no, haven't you taken in anything people have been saying ? Its all intels fault , they are holding back all the best technology for them selves don't you know ? , they spend millions in the most advanced fabrication methods and r&d just to produce the same thing year in year out ............
Back in reality your 100% correct. As pointed out earlier the exact same thing has happened to petrol/diesel engines, its hit a limit and now its all about efficiency. It had ZERO to do with competition from Amd or others.
So you're saying the next gen CPUs will be able to detect when benchmarking software is running and improve their efficiency during the tests?
