here are my results with the 970 so far. NathWraith has some more detailed testing to come which will follow.

my test setup included the following:

  • i7 970
  • Asus Rampage II Extreme
  • Corsair Dominator 1600MHz C7
  • Corsair HW850W
  • Intel 160GB SSD
  • Watercooling

clock for clock, this chip is exaclty the same as a 980X gulftown.

notice the large CPU score from just 4GHz on this vantage run with a single GTX480

here is a screen of the 970 whilst folding.
the cpu at 4.2GHz, 1600mhz dominator at 2000mhz
the cpu needed a little more voltage to hit 4.2GHz, around 1.35v [whereas most 980x cpus need in the region of 1.325 for 4.2ghz]

as you can see, the cpu is generating over 30000 PPD :D

this overclock was achieved by taking the CPU to its generous maximum multiplier of 25 and raising the BCLK to 168

i tried 21 X 200 but the system seems to struggle with the memory divider at that bclk. [this may just be an issue with the motherboard as the current bios is quite old now]

To be honest I may as well buy a 980X instead of the 970 as they are not much different price.

look at it this way

you get a good motherboard.
one that does 200BCLK

the max multi of the 970 is 25

so that gives you 5GHz

i cant see anyone running higher than that 24/7 without extreme cooling. it sort of renders the 980x a bit pointless for anything other than LN runs. i can honestly say i have never taken my 980x multi further than 25.

is folding a benchmarking tool nowadays? whatever happened to just using orthos and 3dmark lol

it is a good indication of the number crunching power of the cpu. as i mentioned, NathWraith has more detailed benchmarks that he has been compiling.

Yes as rjk said its a good indication of number crunching, and is also a very good stress test too.

Iv had clocks that are prime/ibt/linx stable for numerous runs, but would fall over when folding.

For those that want to know my 920 @ 4ghz running that same project rjk was running gets the following.

2.51 mins TPF, with a PPD of 19,391

So for high end folding it looks to be a good cpu, if you have the cash, those extra cores and threads certainly do help lol.

Rich, if you do have time, could you kindly try i7 970 3.20Ghz gulftown to test 25 x 168 4200Mhz and 20 x 200 4200Mhz (with intel turbo boost enabled) on gigabyte ex58-ud5 see if it working ok. Thanks.

Nice overclocking rich above!

Im disappointed in the price of these was expecting them to be around the £500 mark

It always start-off with higher price (expensive to start with) as I can wait until later 2012 because the i7 970 3.20Ghz (gulftown) OEM dropping in price around £600 (depend on our new VAT 20% in 2011)

These clocks will work fine on the UD5. As long as your board can achive 200 BCLK (99% of x58 boards do). 4GHz on these chips hovers around the 1.325 mark with 1.375 approx for 4.2GHz

That's pretty little higher vcore voltage compare to my 920 D0 chip (4.00ghz at 1.27v, 4.20ghz at 1.30v)

Maybe I should wait until i7 970 d0 chip in 2011/12 for lower voltage, better overclocking.

the vcore is a little less on 980x chips.

1.35+ is needed for 4.2 on the 970 samples we have seen

remember - gulftown is a smaller process than nehalem
it runs cooler :)

The price is $900 for these in the US. I wouldn't expect them to go under £600 mark, going further with 17.5% VAT mark, it is spot on tbh. Would love to see them going for £500 though :(
