Intel Core i7 975 chip what motherboard and memory

hi

i will be doing boinc modeling on this machine as well which is why i though getting a chip i didnt have to overclock by as much over default would be better ( more stable and less heat ) than a very overclocked lesser chip

i can see although there may be a small benifit in this area the differance of even getting the 920 to 3.8 gig and the 975 almost maxed out at 4gig is not a big differance

this has been very interesting and saved me a ton of money and heartache to find out later all the above for myself
thank you to all who have contributed

best regards
Ian

A 920 at 4ghz will need the same voltage, generate the same heat, and be exactly as stable as a 975 at 4ghz. I'm yet to see a 920 D0 that can't do 4ghz.

A 3.4GHz quad is still quite nippy, what is the realistic increase in computation of an i7 920 @ 4GHz? I suspect RAM will play a part in this.
Might it be worth waiting for the 32nm tech to arrive?

hi,

having sorta settled on the gigabyte motherboard and the 920 chip
any ideas on memory which would be nice and stable at these sort of clocks

hi,

never heard of this stuff it seems very cheap compared to corsair and ocz and the like
is it comparable with those in any way ?
excuse the slight ignorance

A lot of people on here use it and i have never come across any problems.
I am using it in my PC now for the price you really cant beat it unless you like corsair, then i would suggest getting some of that.

plus it does look nice in the flesh :D

hi,

thank you very much for that guys could i ask one last question
i've just noticed my tuniq 120 wont fit on this new system which is a bit of a pain as its a great cooler
i know the new tuniq 120 extreme does fit the new systems but are there any new coolers that are maybe used for better overclocks ?

best regards
Ian

hi,
thanks for that it looks a bit like the tuniq only slightly bigger
i'm wondering just how big it will be with two fans strapped to it ?

best regards
Ian

Not necessarily, the 975 are probably speed binned (ie. the cream of the crop from the middle of the wafers) which would mean they probably run cooler and on less voltage for any given clockspeed, but as said that certainly doesn't justify the extra £500 you have to pay.

I'm yet to see a 920 D0 that can't do 4ghz.

No me neither.

hi,
i hope that will fit in between the ati card and my corsair power supply?
although it should be above the memory i would think ?

Should fit no problems, as for sitting above the memory again no problems. Sometimes the bracket needs raising a little :)
