Hi

I recently purchased the following overclocked bundle :-
1 X Intel Core i7 920 D0 Stepping (SLBEJ) 2.66Ghz overclocked up to 4.00GHz! (Choose overclocking option above.)
1 X Gigabyte EX58-UD5 Intel X58 (Socket 1366) PCI-Express DDR3 Motherboard
1 x Corsair XMS3 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 (1600MHz) Tri-Channel
1 X Noctua NH-U12P SE1366 CPU Cooler (Socket LGA1366)

I payed for the 3.8ghz overclock and I think the memory was substituted as the normal patriot memory was out of stock.
I have a small issue it seems though, When I load the OCUK overclock and do a cold boot, the overclock fails and then it boots with default values, if I restart and reload the overclock it boots up ok and it seems to run fine with no bsod using prime 95 for a couple of hours.
So you see I am at a bit of a loss at what is causing the overclock to fail at boot level. The pc seems to start after I press the power button and the fans spin up, then they stop, then start again, then stops then it boots.

any ideas of what I should be testing to find the issue? I am a bit of a noob when it comes to overclocking, thats why I ordered the bundle.

John
p.s. the gear in the sig needs updating was my previous machine, still using the psu and sound card though.

Same here

Damm and I thought I was the only one.

The same thing happens to me.

I press the power button on, the power come on then disappears and then come on again but this time with the main POST screen showing. It then boots normal.

I've started to have the occasional BSOD but I think it's due to VISTA rather than the setup.

However I've sent a webnote to Ocer's this afternoon.

The reason I rebooted the machine due to system freeze. Couldn't do anything.

Once the machine booted to the POST screen the machine turned itself off and then on again. Basically the POST bootup was stuck in a loop and I couldn't do anything.

I turned the machine off at the mains and then back on after a 5min wait.

I receieved the following messages:-

BIOS CHECKSUM ERROR
RELOADING BIOS FROM HPA.

Once done the system booted normal.

Unfortunately it's reset back to stock settings.

I manage to find the Ocer's settings in the BIOS setup and reloaded them.

Systems back to normal.

I'm now dubious to this setup as two people on the forums have experienced what I have been going through.

I have also noticed after a month of the system settling down the temps seemd to creep up.

Initially the idle temps hovered around 40 degrees. Now it's around 45 - 47.

I haven't done any major load testing but I think I'll try it out to make sure the system is stable!

I have the following setup (Will add to my sig after this post):-

1 X Intel Core i7 920 D0 Stepping (SLBEJ) 2.66Ghz overclocked up to 4.00GHz! (Choose overclocking option above.)
1 X Gigabyte EX58-UD5 Intel X58 (Socket 1366) PCI-Express DDR3 Motherboard
1 x Patriot (3x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 (1600MHz) Tri-Channel
1 X Noctua NH-U12P SE1366 CPU Cooler (Socket LGA1366)
1 x ATI Radeon HD 3870 x2
2 x 500GB sata II
1 x 300GB sata II
1 x 250GB sata II
1 x LG Blu ray DVD drive
1 x Pioneer DVD-RW
Antec 902 Nine Hundred Two Ultimate Gaming Case
Hiper M1000 1000W PSU

I also have the above bundle and when i set it up the CPU is showing 3.82 and not 4. which i paid the extra 14.99 for. I'll drop a web note to overclockers on this issue. However When I ran prime 95 I got a blue screen of death. I am not back to my pc till thursday, but i will look into the issue when i'm back. Just hope the system will be stable!

You'll probably find that when you load up cpu-z it will tell you its 4hz as they have set it to 191 blck x 21 multiplier to get 4011mhz, thus making it 4ghz overclock. you can change the bios to 200blck x 20 muiltiplier and turning off turbo to get a 4000mhz.

I have noticed now also, that I have a high pitch sound eminating from my case slightly while everything is at stock.
When the overclock is set, the sound is louder and more prominant. It seems to be coming from the psu area, I can also hear the sound through my headphones and sort of changes pitch when I move a web page window etc in windows enviroment.
Could this be a reason why my overclock is failing at boot? Maybe there is not enough juice going to the cpu when I do a cold boot?

it is a antec quatro 850w.

Id love to know what you guys get as a result to the boot overclock warning. Im getting this and so far with OcUK support do not have a resolution - except if i underclock my 4.0 GHz bundle to say 3.8 GHz the problem seems to go away.

My opinion is its an unlucky pick CPU trying to 4.0 when it should be really a 3.8 or less grade.

I have replaced my psu, and I think it might have solved my boot overclock warning. fingers crossed ;/

I have dropped my BCLK to 181 to give me 3.8ghz overclock for now, as under prime my temps are hovering around 84. I am not sure if its my case though, its an antec p182 with the three fans it originally had.

Maybe this case doesnt have enough air flow with these fans to cool an i7 overclocked?

I don't think it is your PSU that was causing this problem johnny, I think this has something to do with the UD5 tbh..

I don't experience the failed overclock warning although I have had it a few times when I have used bad BIOS settings, but I do get the double boot thing on both of my UD5's.. when I first turn my system on in the morning or whenever, it will power up, fans will spin for a second, then it shuts down, and powers back up again and boots into Windows..

It doesn't do this everytime, it only really happens when my system has been turned off overnight or if I have turned the switch off at the mains..

I would love to know what it is that causes this to happen.. someone suggested that it could have something to do with the dual BIOS, but I have had boards in the past with Dual BIOS and I have never experienced this before..

Well the high pitch whine I was getting has gone, which at least is one thing.

I notice my setting that Overclockers set up for me, has the Qpi/uncore voltage set to auto, is this usually done in an overclock, I read somewhere saying it needs to be a set voltage? Maybe this is a contributer to my failed boot overclock then.

Its an odd thing because my chip flys with all the tests in windows and seems stable.

do you have access to a power supply tester?

all bundles go through 8 [minimum] hours prime + 1 hour linX
as well as being tested at 4ghz regardless of them being 4ghz/3.8ghz

the voltages are fine
please do not adjust BIOS settings without consulting me

if you call system support and ask for Rich

i will help you out as much as i can :)

I dont have access to a power supply tester I am afraid, the good news is, that the replacement psu I bought might of done the trick.
I have started my pc from cold this morning and just now after I came back from work, and it started up on both occasions, no fans spinning then stopping then booting, with the boot failure at all. Touch wood!
Its seems stable in windows after running prime and intel burn test for a few hours last night and I have had no need to play with any bios settings.
Only thing I am slightly concerned about is my temps getting to 84c on full load, I read a lot of people saying its not safe :/

John

84c is fine johnny.. these processors are good up to 88c I heard, although I have seen some people hitting the low 90's.. this isn't good IMO..

But 84c is fine mate..

Hi Rich, it's Ben - we spoke not so long ago about the cold boot problems listed above. I upgraded to bios F9E as you suggested, but i am still experiencing the same problems. I am currently running stable at stock speed.

I couldn't see a way to pm you so i've quoted in the hopes that you're notified! Any suggestions?

Many thanks

Anything up to 85C is fine. But anything between 86C and 88C is pretty bad and not safe. I use 4ghz at below 70C and 4.2ghz at below 80C. I wouldn't trust myself going over 80C.
