Hey Ocuk forum :)

i have recently purchased an : MSI H61M-P20 Motherboard. so i can build a small pc that will get used mainly for lan events and after become my HTPC .

I have 2 options of CPU currently.

i5 2400 - Cheap or maybe even free from work
i5 3470 - Will have to purchase but performs well

Got a spare MSI R9 270 and 450w PSU to go with either.

So for budget i would obviously pick the i5 2400 but is it worth buying the i5 3470 ?

if anyone ownes either i5 please share your experiences

Thank you very much :)

How much is the difference? Free is always good though!! Another thing to consider is that the motherboard may need a bios flash for the 3470 to work but it will work fine with the 2400. Being a MSI board this would concern me because there is a very high chance of bricking the board using any of MSI's flashing tools. Any other manufacturer would be no problem but there are countless tales of MSI flash tools bricking their boards.

Go with the 2400 for the reasons already mentioned above.

Not much difference in performance.
Cheaper.
And you won't have to the flash the motherboard, which is always a bonus :)

Thanks guys , Even though the MSI website says it supports the 3470 does it still need flashing ....

i5 3470 is £149.99 - https://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CP-509-IN&groupid=701&catid=6&subcat=1275

i5 2400 - i will have to ask my boss how much he wants for it (second hand) hopefully he will say just have it ;)

2400 all the way. No point paying ripoff prices for brand new cpu's that are a gen and a half behind the current cpu's and on a socket that is dead.

Depending on how old the motherboard is it may well need to be flashed for the 3470. You flash a board to make it compatible as it wouldn't have been from new as H61 launched with Sandybridge not Ivybridge.

You didn't buy the board brand new as well did you?

I didn't think the board was bad for £30.

As well ? i haven't bought the 3470 ...

Okay so the i5 2400 with my old R9 270 :) hope it runs well

Still MSI though and probably still needs a bios update for a 3470.

The point about buying the motherboard new was that if bought new you would have been better off buying a H81 board and picking up a second hand Haswell cpu to fit in it. At least you would have been on the current socket.
