FWIW a quick look where I am shows a couple of 10980xe in stock for USD1075 so maybe need to look further a field or go with something else. Comparatively the 3950x is going for USD930 pre-order and the 3960x, 2 in stock for USD1600 ea. Small local stock probably due to prices and low demand for both the Intel and AMD processors.

The 10980xe appears to be a good choice only if you have a x299 board and lower count CPU. But if you're investing in the platform anew, time to return it and join the threadripper 3000 world.
