I'v got a Zalman HD135 htpc setup which until yesterday had a amd setup x2 3800+ OC'ed to 2.2ghz and ran temps of 35c idle and 47c full load. The amd still couldnt really cut it with 1080p HD be it mkv or HD-DVD's so I thought id go for an intel setup I changed the motherboard out and had a D930 lying around so stuck that in now the temps are between 50c to 69c!!! at one point it hit 75c (while testing with sp2004 i stopped test as it wasnt slowing down). I'v been told I should get a C2D as they run much cooler, which I have in my main rig and it runs cool but will it be closer to the amd setup I had or am I looking at a few degrees below the D930.

Just so you have an idea of what the setup is

Before
AMD AM2 X2 3800+ OC'ed @ 2.2 | Silverstone NT06 + Noctua 120mm 600rpm
Asus M2V
1GB (2x512mb) corsair XMS
MSI 7300GS fanless
2x 500gb sammy, 1x 400gb seagate, 1x 10GB seagate
Pioneer 111D
FloppyDTV-C
Enermax liberty 400w

Now (only listing changes)
Intel D930 stock at 3.0Ghz | Silverstone NT06 + Noctua 120mm 800rpm
Asus P5N-E SLi
2x AcoustiFan DustProof Quiet 60mm 2700rpm
1x Noctua 80mm 1200rpm
Another Noctua 120mm 800rpm mounted near gfx card

Should I see improvements with the C2D? I have been looking at getting the E6300.

I know my 4ghz p D 925 is as fast as a stock 6400, so a 6300 should be a bit faster as your pentium D, it will be cooler too, 65nm pentium d's use 90ish watts, core 2 duo's 65 watts of heat.

All core 2 duo's clock easeley to at least 2.8 ghz, most to around 3.4 ghz, wich makes them faster as any amd or other intel cpu, it would be comparable to a 5.6 ghz pentium D ( a 2.8 ghz core 2 duo).

It'll be cooler and faster even at stock in most things, if you overclock it'll really shine and the thermal increase won't be huge if done on stock volts and it usually has a lot of headroom there too :D

A 4GHz P4D, will match a Core 2 at around 2Ghz more or less, in some Benchies the P4 will win, and others the Core 2 will win. In real world applications, I'd probably take the Core 2, as on average it seems to win the more 'usefull' benchy's while the P4D will take the synthetics.

IE Oblivion FPS test Core 2 Duo, 3DMark 06 CPU test Intel P4D. (Assuming the P4D is clocked 100% or higher above the Core 2).

SuperPi's another of those rather 'off' tests. It does seem to like Core's architecture, so it will always give Core2's an insane apparent performance. Fun though :P

Of course comparing an overclocked CPU with a stock one is pretty pointless imho. Clock the E6400 to 3.2Ghz and it will thrash the overclocked P4D, and still use a lot less power.
