Intel is considering delaying the launch of three new 45nm quad-core processors, reports are suggesting.
According to various sources, Intel currently sees no advantage in releasing its new 45nm processors while AMD is still struggling to launch Phenom. Apparently the chip giant believes that in the current environment any new product release would only harm sales of its own 65nm range.

It is therefore revising its product strategy, and delaying the launch of the Core 2 Quad Q9300, Q9450 and Q9550 from January to February or March.

The decision would cap a troubled year for AMD, which has struggled with technical glitches in its quad-core Opterons, causing serious delays in shipping which have reportedly knocked 40% off its share value.

That'll be a pain if Intel confirm this. I have been waiting until the 45nm Quads came out before my next upgrade, but it looks as though that will be a bit longer:(

ffs that means they wont be dropping their prices anytime soon :( I was hoping for a january sale job to go down but now Im guessing I will be buying my new cpu in february. and march!? THINK OF THE CONSUMERS INTEL!!! THINK OF THE CONSUMERS!!!!

Intel, just as any other IT company, does'nt give a stuff about their consumers. It's all about profits. Why release something when the only thing that competes against it is something that they make themselves? This is exactly why we need AMD to get their heads out of their backsides and actually release something competitive.

Next thing we know Nvidia will be doing the same as AMD has already said there will be no high end release from them until 2009. This is all bad for us. Delayed launches and before we know it the prices will go up due to there being no competition. :(

Wouldnt they want to release the 45nm version at the same speeds and prices and make more profit that way?

nvidia will do? pastymuncher, nvidia already have done. the gtx is over a year old remember

No as it costs to change the plants from 65nm to 45nm. They have no real need to change so they will save money till there is a time and a place for 45nm cpus.

Was going to wait for a Q9450 but what with delays and rumours of the Penryns carrying a nasty price premium due to lack of competition, I'm tempted just to buy a Q6600.

Sod it, just going to get a Q6600 now. To be honest they're cheap enough for me not to really care anyway.

Well not cheap like an E2140 is cheap but the Quads are certainly much better value now at £150. This time last year I picked up my first Core2 Duo, bought the cheapest one I could find which was the E6300 retail and It cost me £111.

Fast forward one year and yes the Quads do seem much better value, however there is now a budget dual-core range. I couldn't say for sure which CPU I would pick now if I was building my first INTEL LGA775 rig

E2140/E2160 vs Q6600

And so every1 goes off to buy up the stock of Q6600's etc that Intel want you to buy :p Ofc they are gonna delay the release of their 45nm cpu's for as long as possible now and just let the current stock of cpu's get smaller and smaller so every1 can jack up their prices as high as possible. Its the way the economic world works.

Oh dear its a bit like nVidia being able to milk the 8800 series for so long!

Well as long as the Q6600 keeps dropping in price I cant complain, makes the choice whether to buy one or not easier, also the second hand market will be teeming with lots of nice 'used' dual-cores, cheap as chips. . .
