I am considering upgrading my current CPU which is an E2180 stuck at 3GHz on a Gigabyte P35-DQ6.

Do you think spending £35-40 after selling my current CPU is worth it? I am really struggling to find any good info about the E5400 and how well they typically overclock being a 45nm chip.

I was hoping to get around 3.8GHz with a new CPU and chaning out my RAM from 2GB Corsair PC6400XMS 4-4-4-12 to something like 4GB PC8500XMS or whatever brand is currently best bang for buck.

If anyone can link some reviews that show Overclocking or indeed have one of these CPU's they have overclocked. :)

This thread/review will probably tell you all you will ever need to know.

It's a great chip - 3.8 is ambitious but ppl have managed it. I'm very pleased with mine but i was only after a modest overclock to begin with, 3.2, and it attains it with no issues. I haven't pushed it for more but I'm sure i could squeeze a few more 100Mhz out of it but for now i'm happy.

Prolly Gigabyte P45 UD3 and custom water. From what iv read 4Ghz should be reachable for 24/7 use. Its a downgrade from my E8600 but it will be more fun getting a decent clock outa it and will be plenty for what i use my rig for.

I've got to agree with that. I had a larger budget planned for this build but i couldn't resist this chip for its value for money. However, I wish i had upped my budget for a p45 chipset as i don't think i would be having quite the memory timing issues i'm having if i had.

4Ghz is reachable but it's a mighty clock. With the board and cooling you'll be using i'd imagine you'll certainly be able to have a good crack at it.

Good luck - let us know how you get on and the BIOS voltages/timings etc you end up using.

Edit: A guy called Pneumonic has reached 4.2GHz - see this thread

Damm and thats a E5200. They dont like high fsb from that link further up so if this is a decent cpu its got the right mobo and cooling to get a nice clock. Very nice clock hes got there. In the middle of a project at the mo so wont be getting a mobo for awhile. Will report back when i do though. Thanks.

I have decided to order an E5200 since they are only £52 and see how it goes, hopefully I will be able to get to at least 3.6GHz if not it's only a small outlay for a small gain.

I had a good look at other peoples threads about overclocking them and some reviews and it would appear that there is no consistent stable clock expected from any particular batch etc.

Will post back with results once it arrives, hopefully with in the next 3 days if all goes to plan, thanks for all the help on this.

Hey yeah I got the chip on Thursday but due to unforseen circumstances I have been unable to install an test it now until next weekend.

Will repost back with a screenie and some initial finding on the 16th hopefully. :)

I got the E5300 purely as i dont think my mobo would like the .5 multi, but i can get it to 3.8 stable but 24/7 i run it at 3.4 so i can run my RAM 1:1 then at 1066
