I bet its been asked before but....

Is it really worth paying the £100 extra for the 6600 over the 6300, I have seen the 6300's going crazy and over 3Ghz fairly well and im not sure if i could get more with the 6600. Im only doing air cooling tho. Opinons?

I know the 6600 roughly does the same OC level,so what would you chaps recommend for bang for buck?

---------------------------
Im after a fast 3d rendering machine and I need mobo, cpu and ram(pref a lot of ram). For around £350-400 (maybe slightly more).

What would you guys recommend for a good selection to help me achieve a good OC machine?

Thank you guys, Sol :D

well if you are going to be doing a lot of rendering then the extra cache would make it worth it.

Oh right, I had no idea that would affect performance, Thanks for the reply mate :).

As im not in need of this new machine right this minute (maybe a month or so max) do you think waiting for the Quad core Kentsfield would be worth waiting to aid better in rendering?

If you can afford £500 or more on a CPU then absolutely. The fact that you're looking at an E6300 suggests that maybe a Kentsfield would be out of your budget. Get the best you can afford - an E6300 is a sterling chip. You could always buy the setup now with an E6300 and since it's fairly cheap you could upgrade to a Kentsfield at a later date when the prices are likely to be a little less insane.

Ahhh, I didnt realise they were going to be quite so expensive. I think as a student it may just be slightly out of my price range then  hehe.

I think I might just go out and buy the 6300 and as much ram as I can afford (2Gb to start with) later in the year, it is sure to last me quite a long time.

In ** opinion do you reckon it would be much of an increase over my godly Opteron 146? Worth the upgrade you think? Maybe Dual Core might be a nice idea.

It depends what you do really :) If you're a hardcore gamer then it's probably not that worth it but if you work with applications, video encoding and all that sort of stuff then it'll definitely be worthwhile.

Oh ok then, Well thanks for all your help.
I will most likely go for the upgrade then, Its for ny work so most likely very worthwhile over the years.

Thanks Mate, Sol :D

HELL NO is it worth £100 over the E6300. Heres a screenie of mine at ~3.4Ghz.

Last night i managed 16Hours orthos stable at 3.5Ghz with a load temp of 51-53 degrees. Will be using 3.6-3.7 for 24/7 use, and i haven't even tweaked the memory timings yet :D

Go for some of the best ram you can afford.... The Gskill HZ 6400 stuff or some TeamGroup Xtreem 5300..... The team stuff is awsome and very highly regarded over at XS.

Maybe not for you, definitely not for me....but he said he would be doing 3d rendering and extra cache comes in handy when doing intensive tasks like that.

Hmm ye, but an extra £100 for a seemingly tiny performance boost doesn't really seem worth it. It really depends how far he is willing to overclock. Ive jsut had my BSOD even after 15hours orthos last night, so i will bedoing a little memtest today to see whats up with my memory.

My point is that it may be seemingly tiny to you...but the performance boost in rendering will be significant.

ye i wasn't sure of the affect on rendering, but was sure that the extra cache could be offset with a ~200mhz speed boost.

Im not into that so im bowing out with my noobie knowledge :)
