Wondering if anyone can shed some light on this

My CPU is recognised in my BIOS (striker II Formula) as running at 3.33 with a multiplier of 10x which is fine. As soon as i start the nvidia control panel is says the CPU multiplier is only on 6x?

anyone help on this one? not used to nvidia control panel much before ....

Speedstep/C1E is on in the BIOS. It lowers the multiplier to 6 when you arent doing anything, to save power and produce less heat.

When you open a CPU intensive program or run a game, it will go back to 10.

Thanks for the quick reply. Never heard of the speedstep before?
I will try run a game and alt tab and check the multipler then and see if it is on 10x
Just need to wait for my gfx card to return from rma now .....

Will disabling speedstep make a difference in performence on normal apps etc? or is it best to leave it on?

Also hate to double post but does a 3dmark06 score (with stocks no OC) of 15000+ sound about right for the build in my sig?

Ive never OC before so i would know where to begin. Maybe one day when i feel brave enough ill give it ago lol.

Also one quick question which is not CPU related. My motherboard (striker 2 formula) has a mini pci supremefx audio card with a connection to connect front panel audio. Should i connect the ac97 audio cables to the card for front panel audio in my antec 900 or the hd audio cable? the reason i ask is because when i game i get interference only through front panel audio on my headset when i use the HD one. Yet if i connect at the back panel direct into the sound card i get no issues. would changing to the ac97 eliminate this?

ON my rampage I use the HD Audio connector and have no problems
You should only really turn off speedstep etc for when youre OC'ing so you can check your speeds, for day to day use you should really leave it on
If you are interested in OC'ing you should be able to get 4Ghz no problem, I did
Change the AI Overclock tuner to manual profile
Set your FSB freq to 400
Then you need to adjust your DRAM frequency, set this to 1066 or lower (this is because your RAM is linked to your FSB)
Then you should be good to go, if it fails to post just clr cmos and it will revert to default settings, if you want to know more or take it any further you'll have to start playing with voltages so read the stickies at front of this forum, but the board should be able to do this OC on auto settings for voltages so dont worry, good luck

Thanks for the help my memory frequency is set to 1066 i wil try what you suggested with the frequency when i get some of my parts back from rma. Is it safe to do this on air? im only using the stock cooler to i might have to upgrade that to keep it running cool enough.

Thanks, I may be giving you a shout via pm for some advise to see how far we can take it with a tinker .... Only if you dont mind of course?

I have my E8600 running at 4.3 ghz with the same temps I got at stock, 33/33 idle, 53/54 under full load. This chip loves to be overclocked, take advantage of it.
