Delidding as darket suggested is the process of removing the metal heat spreader from the top of the CPU and replacing the thermal paste between the heat spreader and the CPU die. Don't confuse the heatspreader with the heatsink, it's simply the square metal section that caps the CPU. On all xxx-E CPUs (including Ivy bridge) there is no thermal paste, the heatspreader is soldered to the CPU die resulting in better thermal transfer. Intel used to do this for all their CPUs, but cheaped out over the last couple of years on all but their high end platform.
