Hi there
Please excuse my ignorance on this matter.

I notice from reading various web articles that most systems that have an i7 920 installed are using 6gb of RAM.

Is that necessary for the i7 920 to operate efficiently ?

If so, what effect would that amount of memory have if the i7/6gb RAM was coupled with XP Pro (32bit).

As XP only uses approx 3gb of RAM what is the point of the extra 3gb ?

Could you run XP and an i7 920 with just 3gb of 1333 RAM.

As I said, please excuse my ignorance on this

cheers

Aye - you can run 3GB of RAM in an X58 absolutely fine and XP 32bit will play nice.

However, I think the main point is that its a shame to use £500+ kit with an antiquated operating system, as 6GB + 64bit OS seems to be the sweet spot for the i7 (plus 6Gb are really fast and cheap). If you got windows 7 RC (free until march 2010) you can experience all the joys of a new OS and loads of RAM.

Thanks so much for the quick replies.

Confirms my thoughts and yes I can see the waste of 6gm with a 32bit system.

Many thanks

cheers
