intel i9 7900x showing up as i5 7640x

hi i recently bought a oem i9-7900x from this site to put into my new build but once the build was complete the cpu was showing as an intel 15-7640x in the bios, device manager and cpuz. i have tried uninstalling all the core drivers and restarting it but currently nothing has worked.

How many CPU cores are showing in Windows Task Manager? From your description it sounds like you have been sent the wrong CPU in error.

Edit - of course the way to be sure would be remove the cooler and see what written on the CPU, but the task manager way is easier!

Only 4. Im pretty sure I remember checking it before I put it in and it was correct. Unfortunatly it’s under a water cooling loop right now

Gotta have been supplied with the wrong CPU I think. I wonder if an OCUK customer somewhere is keeping quiet about the fact they ordered a 4 core CPU and got a 10 core one instead

If it shows in BIOS as wrong then it's gotta be a wrong CPU, unless its a very very weird bug in the motherboard lol.

The chip has a model number and other things written on the heat spreader, also perhaps the packaging depending on how it was packaged.

Anyway you need to talk to customer service if its wrong.

Check in bios..

Different scenario, but i upgraded my Nana's PC from a duel to quad core yesterday, Windows still reported the original chip, after a few reboots it eventually realised what chip it had lol.

I have the i9-7900X now and HWMonitor reports it having 12 Cores and 25 Threads...

Is the loop hardline or soft tubing? If it's soft is there enough slack to remove the CPU block?

That'll be a software bug. Check the bios to see how many cores/what cpu it is reporting.

The heat spreaders on these two cpu are totally different. Simply check the spreader.

sorry for the late reply. its a hardline tube so its a bit of a pain to take of but if i cant find a solution before the 27th im going to call overclockers and ask for a replacement

You are just going to have to drain it down and take it all apart. That's the only way you are going to see what is on the heatspreader.

What motherboard is it? have you updated the BIOS? done a BIOS reset?
