Intel i9 chip

Equivalent? I doubt there will be one cheaper than a grand... still, it's pointless getting a top or the range chip now then getting another one a few months later. Either get one now and stick with it or wait.

exactly i really just dont see the point in an upgrade every 6 months when todays current hardware will see you at least 2 years unless your using extreme software an applications. i try an wait 2-3 years before considering an upgrade lol

I remember reading an article about a CPU manufacture, probably either Intel or IBM, that are planning to use light to transfer data, rather than electrons, thus being able to create ever so small CPU's which create virtually no heat.

Then again Intel also have plans to create cellular based CPU's - who knows?

1nm = 10 Angstroms. Atomic radii are typically in the region of, what, around 1-2 Angstroms (off the top of my head, I could be a bit off there).

No problems for the electrons, but definitely some nasty quantum-mechanical effects at that kind of scale!

I'm still on an athlon 4800+ 939 system (2 GB of DDR1...).
Very much looking at i7 for now, though. The upgrade has to come soon, and i5 seems too far off at this point. With that said, I might be able to wait for the DX11 cards, so maybe i5 is going to be okay for me. But... Damn! Those 920s overclock so nicely! :)

So no point in waiting for prices to come down then? I guess that it will be a while before they do come down at least a littl bit?

They are all planned yes. But I read an interesting article recently in the IET magazine about die shrinks, and the actual costs to build fabs that can support the shrinks. As they shrink the dies, the cost goes up considerably. We may one day hit a size, that isn't viable to actually make, because it costs too much to produce, and the manufacturers won't be able to make back the initial build costs. So while 22, 16 and 11nm may be planned currently, it might never happen because of simple economics.

You misunderstand. The factories themselves only have to be adapted with better technology, and that's a one off payment. Then you only need to sell a certain number of units from it to start getting a profit. As for how much it costs each time, it should be about the same for each change. Making the change from 65nm to 45nm today would be cheaper than it was when it was first introduced, and from 45nm to 32nm would be about the same as 65-45nm was when it was first introduced, if you understand what i'm saying. In any case, i doubt there will ever be a point where we stop getting better. It doesn't work like that, the human race is always moving forward. You may be right, the processor as we know may well one day reach it's limits. Then we will have to find another technology, organics for instance, to change to.

And there are folks who are scared to go above 1.40vCore with 45nm tech! :D

Well I know you got top notch custom water cooling but do you think its good enough for 1.9vCore through 32nm heh! :p
