(feel like i've been spamming this forum)
I've installed windows 7 64 pro and had a look at IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers section in device manager whilst troubleshooting a problem (a problem not related to this post). I had numerous ATA Channels listed (0,0,1,1,2,3,4,5) which all correlate to the two ide channels and six sata channels on my mobo. I have 3 hard drives, all sata2, one sata1 blu-ray drive, and an old IDE DVD drive.
To cut a long story short(er), device manager was suggesting that my sata drives (ahci should be enabled, its on in the bios) were configured as IDE as one of hard drives was reported as being in multi-word dma mode 2, which concerned me. Reading up I found that this is impossible (please correct me if i'm wrong) as sata drives will only work at their native speed, and that the old pata dma modes do not apply to sata. Also, that device manager will report some kind of pata dma mode for ahci enabled sata drives for legacy reasons. I wasn't to happy with this, I like to see that my sata drives are configured correctly and that ahci is enabled, native command queing is enabled etc.
So I got lucky lol found something somewhere about Intel Matrix Storage Manager, go here for details. It's for intel chipsets only of course. I installed it and rebooted, after boot all my sata drives were re-detected and drivers installed and I rebooted again. Device manager now reports only two ATA channels as I would expect (with my IDE DVD Rom drive on one), viewing devices by connection in device manager now shows my sata drives as I would expect them too. Also, the Intel Matrix Storage Manager is a nice simple app that shows you all your sata drives, if ahci is enabled, if native command queing is enabled, and some other info (RAID info too). Just thought I would share this for anyone else obsessed with knowing your hardware is setup and reported correctly
