I've bought another HSF for a Socket 478 mobo but it is different to the one on my existing mobo which I know was also an Intel HSF.

The new one has a circular copper(?) contact point with the CPU which just covers it while my original one is an aluminium material which completely covers the CPU. Looks to me like the new one may be more efficient but wondered if any of you guys had experience of them?? Is it a 478 HSF??

TTIUWP :D

Cut your losses and buy an Arctic Cooling Freezer 4 - simply the best S478 cooler ever made.

a lot of the faster Northwood Socket 478 processors were shipped with copper cored aluminium heatsinks, as they are better at transfering heat away from the CPU.

Pretty sure that 100% of Prescots for socket 478 needed the uprated cooler as well. So yeah its quite likely to be a socket 478 cooler. Basically if it clips onto your socket as normal, then yes its the right cooler.

They work fine, and will allow a mild overclock without any problems at all. Although aftermarket coolers are often a fair bit quieter than the intel ones.
