Hi,

Following some issues with the current PC I'm looking to upgrade my parents PC. It's just used for Office tasks, internet browsing, e-mail and playing videos.

Which would be best to build the system around, the Intel Pentium Dual Core G4400 or the AMD A10-7860K?

The AMD feels like the better all round system, but it would be more expensive and I'm not sure if it's worth it.

Tried googling, can't find much (the A10-7860K doesn't seem too common).

What do people think?

Get the cheapest option as both processors are perfectly capable of doing the basics like videos, office etc. I'd lean towards the G4400 due to it's better single thread performance, lower power consumption and cheaper cost.

I have an AMD Athlon 5350 system which I set up for around £100 and that works perfectly for office tasks. If you want something with a bit more umph, I'd go for the AMD A10. Or, if you have a spare GP|U laying around, the 860k.

The Pentium is quicker for low threaded games though despite higher FPS some reviews report a lot of stuttering where as the AMD CPU is smooth, probably due to higher stress on fewer cores.

Exactly my thoughts. The G4400 is easily capable of everything the OP has listed, is easily cooled by the stock cooler so makes very little noise. If it's cheaper than the AMD option, spend the extra on a small SSD and the PC will be very responsive. Few months ago I built a little PC for my father in law with a G4400, a 120GB SSD, 500GB laptop drive (had a spare) in an NSK300-150. It's tiny, nearly silent, and just as fast and responsive as any of my PCs so long as you steer clear of gaming or video encoding!

Thanks for the responses.
I'm very tempted by the Pentium due to price (I'd prefer the AMD chip because I'd like to see how capable it is but not really sure there's any benefit for my parents).

Is it best to get a DDR4 board or DDR3 board? DDR4 is newer, but more expensive, although not much. Plus depending o nthe boards the DDR4 board might be cheaper than the DDR3 board.
I know little about this level of board, what's the difference between H110/H170/B150 boards?

Micro ATX might be best incase they decide to downsize the case at a later date.

Thanks.

considering the cost difference between DDR3 and DDR4 isn't too much, I would prefer to buy DDR4 due to the ability to upgrade/replace ram in the future.
