Intel Pentium-M 735A 1.7GHz, 400MHz FSB, 2MB L2 Cache

if your laptop mobo supports 533 bus, then you can also pin mod your 1.7 to 2.26 [very high success rate with this mod, and have done 2 myself]

the only downside of the "Dothan" chip is it doesn't multitask particularly well and as already stated will struggle in comparison to modern chips when re-encoding.

personally I'd try and get a core duo [Yonah] or core 2 duo [merom], but you would be looking £500 minimum for a Yonah

I'd rate a 1.7 as equivalent to a 3.0/3.2 P4 on overall performance

Hehe, I don't follow the football. I'm not from Wycombe originally, but I'm at the Uni here. It's a fairly decent place though, providing you avoid the rougher areas. Never had any trouble myself.

That's a bit random isn't it? I've lived in High Wycombe all my life. The night life is crap and there's very few decent facilities. Aylesbury is a little better but a little far on a Friday/Saturday night.

The ski centre was cool, until it burnt to the groud (a good few years ago now).

Yea, hopefully I'll be able to increase my budget a bit, or maybe conroe laptops will have come down to my budget in 6 months.

I'l definitely get a conroe laptop over a Pentium-M if possible :)

Craig.

How do the Pentium M's compare to the AMD Turion X2s? In raw performance? say the 1.8ghz turion tl60?

Not sure on non-multi tasking stuff, but the X2 would own a PM on multi tasking and stuff that benefits from 2 cores.

Yeah that is decent, especially for a Celeron. I also thought they were still utter tosh but the mobile ones must be faster due to the extra l2 cache or something. Impressive that you can get a Celeron m 1600 laptop for 300 quid and that'd outperform a 3.4ghz prescott, in super pi at least.

thanks - this is also what im unsure of, whether the turion would beat the PM in single threaded applications while not multi tasking.
