looking to boost my 9550 CPU's from their bog standard 2.83(I think) and wanted to know would it stretch to 3.0? Has anyone with the same CPUs tried to overclock them? If so what did you get it stable at?

I've not overclocked before but I believe I can easily get a bit more power out of my gear.

As a total beginner what did you use to overclock. Bearing in mind I've got quads so would I need to overclock each core? ah it gets complicated I know but I'm willing to take it VERY easy to start with

Should eeeeeeasily do 3ghz!

3.6ghz is the more likely top end really :)

There is a guide somewhere on the forums but the basis is:

To check CPU top speed, lower memory speed (lower multiplier), start raising the FSB, steps of 10mhz and test using OCCT/SuperPi 32Mb/Prime for a few hours etc, raising the CPU voltage when an error occurs.

Opposite for memory, lower CPU multi, raise FSB, etc.

:)

Follow the guides on here. Should be able to do 3Ghz with your eyes closed!
Some are pushing 4Ghz with good cooling.

Oh, and as you overclock you do every core. You cannot clock just one

aye thought I had to do each...do I do each at the same time...in 1 bulk clock increase or one at a time?

No..

When you overclock your CPU your doing just that, so ALL cores will increase at the same time, not physically possible to increase just one core.

any suggestion of the best application to do this? I'm not confident about BIOS stuff....or is the BIOS the only way to do it?

it would be extremley helpful if you told folk what mobo you've got as some come with there own software & others have a lazymans auto overclock feature in there bios's. ;)

ok hang on till I find my mother board, sorry about this, I'm new at this overclocking game and not sure what to be looking for :)

I'm guessing Asus P5Q.

Rest of his spec looks like its taken straight out of a spec me thread and that seems like the only board that is ever recommended!

CPUZ gives me this reading

i overclocked mine to 3.6gh on rampage fomula mobo 8 x 450. leave settings on auto to avoid the risk of not posting then check volts and go back in bios and lower them manually

Bios is how you should overclock really as programs that autmatically do it for you tend to put more volts through your CPU than you actually need. Raising your FSB to 353 would give you your 3GHZ overclock with such a small overclock you probably wouldnt even have to play with vcore but if it isn't stable raise it up by 0.05 volts each time till you get it stable. Make sure you do get that decimal place in the right place though or you could fry your CPU.

3.6ghz is very easy on a Q9550 ive reached it using only 1.15v and its 24 hour prime stable, with idle temps being low 20's and load of 40c. Could easily get it to 4GHZ but i like the low temps and volts.

Stable for about 7 weeks...

I'm hitting 3.4Ghz on less volts than that with a Q9450, you should be able to go much higher!

To the OP, on good air you will easily hit 3.6, probably closer to 4Ghz, but it depends on the mobo, your ram, cooling etc

If you buy PC2-6400 ram it has a bus speed of 400mhz. That would allow you to run your ran 1:1 with your fsb upto 400Mhz. But if you bought PC2-8500 which will run upto 533Mhz you could run 1:1 ratio uptto 533Mhz fsb without problem.

You can also change your FSB/ram bus ratio. EG 200Mhz fsb with 2:1 would give 400Mhz ram speed good for PC2-6400!
What does cpuz give you on the SPD tab and memory tabs?
Do you
