Hello,

I have a choice of 3 graphics cards to use with my Q6600 2.4GHz CPU Here's the list of GPU's I can get:

PALIT GTX 460 768mb
HD Radeon 5850
MSI N460GTX Hawk

Which one will be best to go with my CPU? I want to go with the HD5850 But I'm not sure if my CPU will bottleneck that bad boy! :D I would OC my Q6600 but I have an old crappy Mobo which wont let me OC so that's a definite NO NO

Read on a few forums that higher end amd 6970 gfx card suffer a lower perfomance loss from older core 2 quads than nvidea 570gtx. This is due to bandwidth they need to work effectivly. Basically if you have a core 2 quad runinng with a 570gtx you would see frame rate a lot lower than on a i5/7 intel cpu. However on a 6970 its very similar within a few fps. on a core i5/7 system they would be both similar fps wise but on a older core 2 quad on a socket 775 your better of with a AMD card due to architechture they are less CPU bandwith sensitive.

As for what card? wait for AMD 7 series it has gcn which will off load a few tasks from your cpu letting it live a bit longer. get the cheapest one that supports GCN (graphics core next) but be in no mistake at stock you have a pritty significant bottleneck. If moneys tight that is what I would do but you should look at new cpu/motherboard/ram combo. at the vary least change your board for a x48 or p35 chipset socket 775 motherboard so you can overclock to 3.2+ then its a different matter intirely.

out of what you listed the 5850 for reasons stated above. 460 is a fine bang for buck card tho 768mb ram gets eaten up for breakfast in modern games tho at 1080p

What motherboard do you have currently. Is it a P35? The reason I ask is that if you replace the board with a different chipset, you may have to reinstall the OS.. Buying another p35 means you won't have to.

However, I'd certainly buy a second hand P45 chipset board, possibly an Asus P5Q Pro for £25 at the most. You'll get that CPU to 3.4GHz no problem. You'll need a decent cooler too. he 5850 would experience little if no bottlenecking

According to biostar the board you have should allow you to overclock your processor.
the bios manual from here, third file in the zip file is the bios manual

333 fsb would give you 3Ghz, probably without having to worry about voltages at all. even though if you do, your bios allows some adjustment.

CPU Voltage
This item allows you to select CPU Voltage Control.
Options: Default (Default) / +10% / +25% / +35%
taken from the bios manual

so how do i get *** to 3.2ghz?

if you have a proper cooler.
raise the vcore (cpu voltage) to 1.4v, then raise the fsb to 333. (cpu frequency)
make sure the ram speed stays at default speed, eg. 667 or 800mhz.
boot into windows,
download realtemp and run it. and download cpu-z, this will give you all the info you need, fsb, vcore, ram speed, etc.....
download intel burn test and do a run for 20 passes,
or download prime95 and do a small fft test for at least 3-4 hrs.
dont let the temp go over 80.C
if it passes, go back into bios and raise the fsb to 360,
repeat test.
if passes,
raise the fsb to 380,
repeat test, if it fails, either raise vcore to 1.42v or remove 20mhz from the fsb (last stable)

edit.
i have a Q6600 at 3.4ghz and a HD5850 and afaik it does not bottleneck

ok i realise i can oc on my mobo now but would it be easier to oc on a p35 iv found one for £42 is it worth spending that much even though i can oc on my current one? also will the q6600 run skyrim etc @ high settings @ 3.4ghz?
