Intel Quad-Core Q6600 (stock) Bottleneck?

ok i realise i can oc on my mobo now but would it be easier to oc on a p35 iv found one for £42 is it worth spending that much even though i can oc on my current one? also will the q6600 run skyrim etc @ high settings @ 3.4ghz?

If you can overclock to 3.4Ghz... there's no point changing mobos.

You wont until you try. You need to buy the graphics card anyway don't you? If it doesn't play....

yeah i have a hd 5850 vapour-x oc edition on the way now

A 3.4Ghz Q6600 is never going to bottleneck a 5850.

I run a [email protected]... using an HD 6970. It's not bottlenecked at all. Comparing my benchmarks to other peoples with i5/i7 processors. It's pretty much the same scores.

Goes to show the processor is over rated and it's all about the GPU. Within reason anyway.

It's not *that* unusual to have a Q6600 at 3.6GHz. My old Q6600 also ran at that quite happily - although I backed off to 3.53GHz (due to motherboard/case temperatures rather than CPU temps). I used (and still do use) a Prolimatech Megahalems, but there are many modern CPU coolers for a cheaper price that will keep a heavily clocked 6600 within operating tolerances.

What cooler do you have at the moment? I didn't see you mention that.

Heh, depends where you look for "average" :)

On here, I'd say somewhere in the region 3.2-3.5GHz was fairly typical when lots of people had Q6600s in their systems. For the world in general (i.e. not overclocking geeks :) )... probably lower, yeah.

well ill do what ever it takes to just play games at high settings :) sometimes i don't really see the difference between high and ultra, but that could just be me and my poor eyesight :D

I don't see the difference between low and ultra high :p

I've got 20-20 vision lol.

Still I spend obscene amounts of cash on hardware, just so I can flick the slider up to high.

Here's the best part. I play the games once a month and very rarely complete any.

Oh dear!
