Indeed, Atoms are ideal for applications which don't need high amounts of computational performance - which to be honest is all that most PC users need these days.Basically, Intel gimped the new Atom by using FSB and not some high speed interconnect like quickpath. Sounds intentional, therefore a business decision no?
I have heard some people say that Intel is regretting having ever launched the Atom since they make such little money off of the platform. It is cannibalising the sales of other higher margin chips.
They perform well in that they're better than a P4 and use a fraction of the power. It's still more than enough for everyday use - browsing, music playing, word editing etc. Just as long as you're running a sensible OS (Slitaz would be lighting fast) then there's nothing wrong with it.
