Intel sockets: i5, i7, i9

By the looks of it people who splashed out on an i7 (Me included - i7 950) will be able to drop in an i9 on the 1366 socket in a couple of years through the x58 platform with a bios update I would think...

So going 1366 now is rather a good thing, if that statement holds true of course and even if it doesn't we still have our tri-channel memory and super powerful i7 chips. But I do agree that people still waiting to upgrade should wait for i5 get a nice mid-range chip and OC the *** of it!! i5 will be the new price/performance king for sure.

Look at the 680i boards....

Most premium boards around, yet they were left behind and trumphed by a p35 board.

Everyone thought they would suport 45nm quads...

Although they should support i9 with just a bios upgrade, I;m pretty sure that the kinda of person who is going to be an early buyer of i9's is going to want to change their mobo to one with sata3, usb3 and pci-e3.

They will be waiting a while for PCI-E 3 now. It's been delayed. If i9 is due out Q1 2010, it says here that PCI-E 3 is expected in Q2 2010 now.

This sounds good however:

"According to Al Yanes, president and chairman of PCI-SIG, the backward compatibility aspect will allow a PCIe 3.0 card to plug into a PCIe 2.0 system without a hitch; the same will hold true for a PCIe 2.0 card plugged into a PCIe 3.0 system."

Came across this which some may find helpful of the i5 & i7 processors soon to be released (on 6th September and 2010):
