Hi all, quick question - I've just bought a new Intel i5 chip which has come with their standard heatsink/cooler (it says E9378-001 on the top), but upon removing my previous CPU I've noticed the old Intel cooler (it says D60188-001 on it) will also fit even though the heatsink part is larger and has more fins....

Anybody got any opinions on which I should use? Tempted to use the newer one (just because it's newer!) but surely a bigger cooler with more fins on the heatsink will theoretically keep it cooler??

id stick with newer on and some new paste :)

Have a look at the surface which contacts the cpu on both coolers, are they the same?

On 2 stock 775 coolers I had one had an aluminium core & the other had a copper core which gave better cooling. I think one came with a Duo & one with a Quad.

Just a thought.

Hahah might try a little experiment. Anyway, didn't have any thermal paste to hand and the new one came with the paste already applied (I assume
It was paste? Little semicircles of grey stuff on the bottom of the heatsink??) so I'm just trying that for now. Might well try the other once I get some paste. It's idling at around 30/40°C according to the BIOS....

Oh, looks like they're both copper btw....

Cool, cheers!

I think I need to get some new case fans too.... Mine are great, huge and whisper quiet, but run off molex plugs and have a little switch for speed instead of motherboard connectors so I can't monitor/change fan speed from software... Is this advised over the 'set it and forget it' method??

nah it dont matter so much just set them to whatever speed dont annoy u
the cpu fan usually on pwm so...

and yep that was paste hehe :)

The paste that comes with Intel heatsinks are perfectly fine, so don't change it.
