Amazing, my new Haswell setup is next to worthless to me. In their wisdom intel removed all virtualisation making WP8 dev impossible using the phone emulator. Probably to push sales of ivy-e etc. to devs who need this function.

What chip have you got, if it's anything like SB/IB it's only available on some models, not all of them. I know my 4770K had the option in the BIOS.

Edit: Saying that, the 4770K doesn't do VT-d, though I think this was the case for SB/IB as well?

the 4770k, yes its in the bios but not on the cpu. Its appears to be in lower end cpus but not the top one. I better saving for ivy-e or haswell-e.

Wasn't it the non K versions of the CPUs for SB/IB that had the virtualisation stuff? Looking at the 4770 and the 4770K it seems to be following the same route as well.

im in a similar boat, im getting a 4570 instead of a 4670k because of the lack of VT-d, so annoying they disabled virtualisation on overclocking chips :/

I'm a bit lost here - what is you need to run Hyper-v you can't get on a 'k' CPU?

My current understanding is you can't get VT-d, but what do you really need it for? I'm not sure I have any specific hardware I would want to pass to guest VM.

I have some hyperv requirements as well - so want to check I don't get caught out.

Thanks

I would think VT-d is probably needed to pass stuff like the host machines NIC to the VM and if your running a dedicated virtual machine host such as Hyper-V or VMware it would be a desirable feature. Possibly the local optical drive if you want to install software via that rather than mounting an ISO.

Return it and buy SB-E and learn from YOUR mistake of not investigating into it properly.

On a related note, somebody at intel needs to address their addiction with product segmentation because it's beginning to get out of hand.
