Intel to launch Haswell in March 2013

I've don't think I need to upgrade every year as a something new comes out. There isn't the need for more and more power for games and applications as there was 10 years ago. games are console games adapted fro PC so don't even use the power of the present range of processors for example.

After 5 years of a Q6600, I have just upgraded to an Ivy and by comparison it is amazing, I doubt I shall need to upgrade again for some years so why should I be bothered that the socket 1155 board I just bought won't take Haswell? After Haswell and Broadwell, the motherboards will change again anyway as the processors, I read somewhere, will be taking over much of the motherboards chip-set so anyone buying a Haswell will be on a short life board again.

Better to enjoy today's hardware today that stay with older stuff and fret about what might change next year.

Even when they do stick to a socket for a long time like LGA775, they bung a new chipset on at some point, so the boards people bought at release aren't compatible with the newer processors.

I invested in lga1156 knowing full well there weren't going to be any drop-in processor upgrades. Lots of people spend more getting lga1366 boards thinking they'd be an affordable 6 core at some point to replace their 920..... which never happened. Either way, it doesn't really matter as an i5 750 or an i7 920 is going to be good for years.

Indeed! I have no plans to upgrade in a hurry as my new Ivy should last for quite a few years before programmes that need more power turn up! getting anything more powerful is really only for bragging rights!
