Intel to launch quad core processors in Q4!!

I think as apps begin to use dual core chips, then people who multi task a lot will need 4 cores as that would allow them to have two dual core apps running at once with out experiencing system slow downs.

I think that explains what I mean :)

Unlike Intel I haven't heard a huge amount about new products from AMD since AM2 (really socket 939.5). If the next gen AMD processors don't compete with the equivalent Intel cpu's would that mean the end of AMD as a viable alternative to Intel?

Cos I can't see that being too good for the consumer...

In my sig is a picture of an eight core PS3 chip

I wonder how good the cell really is. We have seen paper work and other marketing from Sony and the Cell Group along with tons of techinal documents but I hav yet to see any benchmarks of what the Cell can really do.

Now just imagine of the Cell hit the market for us gamers. Am sure they would cell but would they be worth it is still the matter.

quad core sounds real tempting but i could be doing with a new PC right about now, my rig is showing its age a bit, mite try and push it out of here for another few months untill these hit the market.

Most likey on the same socket as Core 2 hopefully.

Quake 4 benchmarks will proberly go thru the roof :)

Its good news regardless looks like were gonna have some even more powerful systems, and less AMD systems !

Less AMD systems? How can you say that when you have no idea of Intel/AMD's quad core cpu's performance?

I wonder how frequently the average person uses the full potential of dual core systems - I mean, how often does the 2nd core get put under significant load? Also, doesn't Windows (XP and Vista) have issues with more than 2 cores? 4-core systems will probably be aimed at servers.

Errrr who cares?

4 cores is better than 2, 2 cores are better than one.

You cant go wrong with more cores says george dawes

4 cores are better than 2 IF there are apps that make use of them, if not all theyre gonna be doing is sitting there sucking up power and generating heat. I think intel are jumping the gun on this by at least a year or so.

i think quite a lot of people will want 4 cores, they will be ideal for video editing, 3d aps, photoshop etc - maybe they wont benefit gamers much but for people using their pc as a workstation with powerfull apps then loads of cores will be ideal

for example, a company doing 3d rendering may use a renderfarm with 12 pcs, but with 4 core cpus they would only need 3 rigs , imagine how much cash they might save on hardware also even the room space that could be freed up, or they could have 12 x 4 core rigs and save days , maybe even weeks or rendertime

the problem with Cell and the same with the Sun Spark CPus is they run on a reduced instruciton set making them very fast at a limited number of things

i think i read somewere that Sony are going to be using the Cell in a range of other devices once the PS3 is on the market such as dvd/blu-ray players, HDTV Sets.

Vista and XP can cope just fine. The NT kernel was designed for SMP operation.

As somebody said, you really cannot have enough cores. Just look at how many threads are running on my fairly average PC:

I didnt know you could list it that easily. I tried it with steam and Half life 2 and it showed 51 & 24 respectively. If thats the case why does everyone say dual core is no good for games unless its quake 4. Oblivion uses multi threads slightly but the majority of work is still done by 1 thread I think, since it shows no improvement in performance most of the time.

I think maybe the cpu load of the threads has to be balanced and thats why its hard to do, otherwise all the other threads are just waiting for 1 particular one to complete and in effect its still a sequential process

Thats how I understand it, and the same is true of most of the built in windows apps also, I have heard that Outlook Express is the only real multithreaded application in Windows.

True, I just dont see AMD coming back for a long while....hopefully im wrong cos im an AMD fan :p

Mmmm 4XE6600 Cores

well the K8L is due to come out Q2 2007 and is meant to be a native quad core with very low power consumption so we will have to wait and see how that turns out
