intel versus amd + amd lost processing power

There is no point buying amd atm, 6300 is on par with a 4200-4400x2(plenty of reviews show this) o/c to a small amount of 2.5 and you beating a fx62, and with price cuts due from intel very soon its easy really to decide.

not totally true that, there's all sorts of different mitigating circumstances to overcome. take ME. i have an ageing 939 san diego 3700+ with 2 gig of OCZ platinum, if i wanted to go to C2D then i have to change not only the chip, but the memory and mobo or better still i can just go with an X2 4600+ which is what i am doing and get another 18 months out of my system!

Too many people seem to think that AMD X2 chips have suddenly halfed in performance the way they talk about them being "too slow" and "just not up to it" anymore.

The amd x2 chips are more than capable performers but if you are on the lookout for a new system then it would be rather silly imo to buy anything but C2d atm given the performance they offer.

As an 'upgrade' the x2 chips are worthy in the short term but you also have to consider if it really is cost effective in the long run upgrading a cpu for an obsolete socket(939). If you are on a budget then I can see the point but if you can go that little bit more I would personally get wwhat I could on the 2nd hand market for the 939 kit and put the proceeds toward a c2d setup.

theres nothing bad about a short term upgrade, getting the last life out of a 939 system is probably the better idea, if said person cant afford a full rig yet, since in a few months time a hell of a lot of new graphics cards will be out, aswell as intels new core2duos. 939s dont sell to well anymore, so getting as much time from them as possible is generally the best idea.
Im lucky, my new rig is delivered tommorow and this 939 AGP goes to my mate for £300 :D

hi guys
aslo can someone PLEASE answer this quiestion that been bugging me for days why do AMD proccesors when bought E.g an old athlon i have is ment to be a 2800 mhz processor buit in the computer it shows up a 1.6GHz proccessor?
thanks

If I remember correctly and not using any fancy terms the core instructions on your Amd 1.6Ghz are shorter hence the cpu executes code quicker than an equivalent 1.6Ghz Pentium which has longer instruction. So when benched the Amd 1.6GHz is capable of doing the work of a Pentium 2.8Ghz processor.

Off subject - PP (Processing power) and HP(Horsepower) ;)
This very same phenomenom was realised in motor cycle racing when the Rotary drive Norton was unleashed. The Norton engine capacity in cc's was the same as the competing bikes but the physics of the rotary engine blew similar cc capacity bikes away. Handling was a diffenert kettle of fish so we won't go there.
