I prefer AMD myself, (have an intel because it was cheap :D )
many people are trying to convince me that intel are better

RUBBISH!!!! or are they talking sence?

Intel Cpus own AMD right now and Sandybridge owns even Intels last Gen I7 x58 included.(25/2600k Overclocked)

lots of info on the google.

I know, I've had AMD 965 BE, i5 760, and read about the I7 x 58 stuff . My current i5 2400 Sandy owns the lot barring hi end x58 960 980x territory . Pretty impressive !

Why not just search for the 3 million and one other threads like this
Sry but ATM Intel are better with regards top end performance, however AMD offer better value for money at the lower end of the market, and theyre generally there, there abouts in the middle market, its difficault to directly compare as theres related mobo costs too

Actually AMD have by far more chipsets and have used just as many sockets in past 5-10yrs too

AMDs current chipsets on socket AM3, off top of my head, there may be more
890FX, 890GX, 880G, 870
740G, 760G, 770, 785G, 790GX, 790FX

Intels on current sockets
1155 - P67, H67 (Z68 to be released later)
1156 - P65, H55 (actually old socket)
1366 - X58 (also old socket soon to be replaced)

Sorry but was looking for a thread that could be made after people have compared their ocercloxked SB's. That's why I made a new thread. Looks like intel win...

AMD are also my favorite to be honest. The only CPU That I like from Intel is the 980x Hexcore 12thread cpu. That thing is a force to be reckoned with. Other than that though AMD is the way to go. Plus with their new bulldozer architecture soon they will have to buy Intel some pants to wet.

EDIT: The biggest downside to Intel are their prices. They're too expensive. The 980X costs £789.99 from most retailers, I mean.. why..? Just why..? It's too much..

must admit, prefer AMD (even though i currently have intel) because i value my soul..! there is a reason PCs say 'Evil Inside'...

Great thread.

But for what it is worth, you can pick up an AMD 955 quad core for a shade over £100.00 at the moment. With people clocking these up to 4Ghz, there is no CPU that can better it for the money.

+1, can we leave it at that, Intel offer the best raw performance but at a premium, whereas AMD offer the best price/performance with their Phenom II processors. since this is basically gonna turn into a fanboy war sooner or later! :D

+1000 Totally agree.

Read some reviews and decide for yourself. People will always recommend what they own (or some just one brand if they foolishly keep to one), so see what looks best for your budget and usage :)

Intel make good chips but the socket change every 5 minutes and the silly amount of chipsets available put me off.

Got a point about the sockets. Wish intel where slot more backward compatible

And ok,..... Let's leave it at that.... If we have too :)

I've heard from some idiot at my university, that AMD's multicore design is a true multi core design (in terms of how each core can communicate with one another) compared with Intel. He even drew some picture to explain to me what it was all about. I was like WTF.

Has anyone heard anything like this before? BTW please slate this (if his wrong of course )chap at my uni. He's such an idiot.

It can also depend on how much you want to spend. At the cheaper price points AMD offer some very attractive alternatives.

What he probably means is that a quad core from AMD has 4 cores, a Quad core from intel might have 2 cores with HYPERTHREADING. this means that the OS sees a quad (i3 and some i5 < I think, don't quote me)
