Intel's Conroe 2.66GHz beats an Athlon 64 FX-60 overclocked to 2.8GHz!

The question is, how much is a motherboard for one of these chips?

Its no bargain if you have to spend £100+ on a board.
To be honest I won't mind spending that much on a decent motherboard, these chips will be monster clockers and you won't get the most out of them with a cheap-o board.

955X boards dont come cheap - in fact theyre double the cost of an A8N-E\DFI NF4 Infinity.

Can I buy a conroe today? No

Can I buy a FX60 today? Yes

No competition tbh.

Your comparing Intels next gen chip to AMD's current gen. Ahum OK.

Lets just calm down until conroe is out, then see what AMD have to compete with it.

If they have nothing, then its conroe for me. Would be my first intel chip since my Pentium with MMX technology 233mhz! :o

monkey pants im pretty shure no current boards support conroe

and were only comparing it against the fx-60 as a benchlevel, so we know how it performs - were not saying there going to be competing in the market, were saying there a lot faster than amds current highest offering

Yeh true, and I admit it looks very impressive.

correct. you can't even get any boards yet that support yonah and they've been out awhile now. i'm sure there are many people itching to clock some of those puppies.... :D

the difference being, yonah is a mobile cpu.... you can find plenty of laptops with them in....

look how long people waited for a dothan boards.... ages,

i think boards will be ready for conroe on release. :)

count me as one of those people, and you can get the motherboards only things is that i don't want to pay 300euros for one. soon as the Aopen board is released in america then i will get one. A yonah at 3000mhz(they reach this on stock cooler) is faster than a fx60@ 3500mhz.

amd have to pull something amazing out of the hat or they are going to loose a lot of potential customers to intel & conroe.

Your'll have to change your name to IntelPower then :p

I really cant see AMD matching Conroe this year on performance, not with the 5%-ish increase AM2 will give, not even if they brought out a FX with 4MB cache. Will have to wait for K8L chips next year.

This is exactly what I have been saying. I have just upgraded my CPU and motherboard for this year, just graphics and memory remaining, so this years release of the Conroe chip means nothing to me.

My next CPU upgrade will be in 2007 (I only upgrade once a year), and I will be waiting for the release of the 65nm chips from AMD. I will then compare which is the best bang for buck then and make my decision.

All these people are raving about the chips, but not everyone upgrades every few months, so my timing has been about perfect. I won't potentially spend a fortune on an Intel chip, only to have to potentially switch again a few months later.

well that's it soul rider, i'd also say that anybody who adopts first gen tech are taking a risk. i dont normally upgrad untill a new tech is in its second generation, at which point most of the serious buh=gs are usually ironed out and you know where you stand with it:)
