Never considered SMART boards to be fragile either.
However a couple of the newer ones that have the built in projector that protrudes from the top of the board could be used as a hanging frame by some of our students
I was a IT technician in a few schools from jamuary-september, Promethean whiteboards along with Activ Whiteboard software was used in the majority of schools and they never caused that many problems.
Not found the boards to be generally a problem, but the software is generally awful. There was one type that had a conflict with a Windows Update, but neither us or the company could work out which. So in order to install the software, a clean install would have to be done everytime...
Personal preference I think though Try some out.
Just realised your question was where to get them from... Worked as a technician in a school and a local data-cabling/projector company installed all of ours. Check the Yellow Pages for something similar?
School I work in has predominantly Smartboards - though a few are old iBids(?). They're pretty sturdy IMO. I accidentally lent against one and it still works . Has a habit of trying to disconnect itself from the PC and needs re-detecting every now-and-then.
In a previous job I had a portable Smartboard that got thrown around a fair bit and it never gave me any trouble. Their notebook software was very intuitive to use which was important as we would potentially need people to use them in an emergency scenario without any time for training. They never let us down.
