Interested in programming?

Thanks for all the replies guys, looks like we definitely have both enough interest and people willing to help out on the co-ordination side. But we need project - hopefully we can get a vote going over in the programming sub topic - but please post your ideas here too, also (but I've got a good idea of opinions on this) what language should we be using?

Dave L has set up a really useful Google Code project for us here:
http://code.google.com/p/ocuk-dev/

Which should make things a lot easier

So most things are ready to go, do people want to try and topple Windows or usurp half life 2?

Cheers

D

I have little experience of programming ( did really simple stuff in uni last year in JavaScript and Java ). Thanks for the heads up at the forum, I should really check it out more. I doubt I'll be suited towards this project although I would love to do it, due to my lack of experience. :(

You'll be surprised at how quickly you can pick programming up, and how useful you can be to a project without much experience. Part of a project like this is to help people get better at programming. If we do it right there should be stuff that challenges everyone at their level.:)

Sounds good, you're a man with a plan ;). I could always help with co-ordination at a basic level - this past year I've been the team leader of a software engineering project at uni, but imho I feel like a big let down not knowing the in depth programming stuff. :D

It was initially, but Java ME is a nasty variant of Java which lacks so many critical features and requires so much "re-coding the wheel" that it became a chore.

God I remember trying to do things in Jave ME, its a nightmare when simple things that really should be included aren't which you find out at the last minute because it never really occurs to you that you should check the API to see if it does still exist :(

I'll jump aboard :)

As for ideas what about making a game like Crysis :p or an Ocuk Operating System lol

Blackvault

Good stuff. Making Crysis would be easy - just design some that eats all system resources and refuses to update at more than 40FS not matter what hardware you have :p

he he I like the idea of OCUK OS!

In reality actually coming up with a project that is both accessible and deep enough for all the different bods will be tricky:(

Yep, I had to re-write the flippin' Java maths library from scratch (no arctan2, rounding or various other critical maths features in Java ME), and even fileIO on mobile devices is a pain in the ass.

Creating a game really is one of the most diverse projects you can do dangerstat, far better than a generic web application, although you don't want to be using Java for that.

Code:
Ocuk Crysis Version
Display "OWNED" until i = 1
GO

While the OCuk OS does sound complicated I'm sure we needn't make it a replica of Windows.

I do like the idea of a game. We have pretty talented 3D artists and modellers on this forum to take advantage of.

Like all computing projects looking at the whole picture would make it look like a huge task. it would need to be broken down into smaller segments, those segments have their own sub categories, those categories have their own division and those divisions their own teams. only then would it look more possible.

I dont know how I could help with a web based background... would love to learn the different c coding variants though

I just posted about the need for teams and divisions in the other thread in programming along with a good article on game design

We definitely need a few people that can dedicate their time to managing the project rather than doing actual coding.
If you just end up with 20-30 people all wanting to code and no-one wanting to manage then that's a sure fire way of creating a horrible mess.

Doing it properly would also be good for some of the less experienced members to help them learn about requirements gathering, scope, etc. too.

Well at the moment there's three of us volunteered to do "management" and I'd say well over 20 now wanting to get involved (though lots of them seem to be in college uni).

Meep, i'm unsure now.
I was more interested in the Web side of things really! Guess i'll pop up a thread in the section for that.

Ah bugger it, wha the heck, i'll do this too :p

dangerstat I can help in the managerial role if you need more help, done something like this before but stopped half way through due to university commitments.

I'm interested in this :)

I'm interested in learning C#, I don't know much at the moment although I know some basics of the .NET library, as well as general programming syntax. (I learnt a little Java last year, and I write quite a lot of powershell and vbscripts in my line of work).

Just adding another thought; we should get a forum or IRC channel going, would be great for communication.

Loving the ideas so far, I'm happy to do anything programming related, whether it is learning more or actually getting down to coding a project or something. If we also decide to go down the games development route, I wouldn't mind scripting some of the plot (if there is one) or dealing with the text involved - writing is generally one of my strong points :)
