Quite liked this article from Anandtech - they compared a variety of CPUs with powerful GPUs (7970 & GTX580) at 1440p to see whether the CPU makes much of a difference, and then the scaling benefits from multiple GPUs, with some interesting conclusions:

I'd be interested to see some slower GPUs compared too, but the higher-than average resolution can effectively represent a slower GPU on a normal resolution. Interesting none-the-less.
