Interesting Anandtech CPU comparison

Quite liked this article from Anandtech - they compared a variety of CPUs with powerful GPUs (7970 & GTX580) at 1440p to see whether the CPU makes much of a difference, and then the scaling benefits from multiple GPUs, with some interesting conclusions:

I'd be interested to see some slower GPUs compared too, but the higher-than average resolution can effectively represent a slower GPU on a normal resolution. Interesting none-the-less.

Got a bit nostalgic after reading that and blew the dust of the old DFI NF4.
Then I remembered than I either gave the 939 chips away or bent the pins beyond repair by tossing them in a draw with other assorted 'finished with don't care about any more' junk.

An Opteron 180 just arrived from the bay so I will spend today mostly giving it a sound thrashing.
Always wanted one of them but the prices were silly when current.

Found some Corsair DDR in the junk draw as well.
2x1GB of DDR 500 and 2x 512MB of DDR 550.

Don't suppose it will run a pair of 680's too well but if I get bored enough I might just try it.

edit: 3Ghz 250x12 seems too easy, priming away without error.

I got 2.9GHz without errors on my 90nm x2 4600+, 3GHz is perfectly achievable with enough volts and a big enough air cooler.

i really wish that someone who calls himself a 'scientist' would at least use the same scale on all of the axis, makes it much easier for the reader to read and compare (in some cases it was near impossible to compare 1 7970 with 4 7970s).

I would be very interested to see how the results of this for a proper rts game work out. COH2 and RTW2 are going to be 2 perfect examples for me how and when to upgrade.

My 3700+ has been running at 2.8GHz (255x11) for the last 7 years solid in my DFI NF4 ultra-D. Wanted to get an opty 275/280 or an X2 4600/4800 to replace it but used 939 CPU prices were insane.

They still are, my dad got an AM2 Athlon X2, a motherboard and the RAM for the same price the 939 X2s were selling for
