Interesting idea on speed limits

To aid with blow outs you could consider fitting runflat tyres, some control can be retained. Why have the german car companies lead with RFT tyres across their ranges? Either way 70mph/100 mph a blowout isnt going to be fun.

Have you ever driven on an autobahn, the level of driver courtesy and awareness is much higher than in the uk where every other drive is a lemming. They generally keep out of the way of fast moving vehicles.

If the cars are not roadworthy for 100mph why are they roadworthy at 70mph. Even a basic modern car can exceed 100mph, should MOT's be more strict to remove the old bangers off the road?
Retards still exist everywhere, parking in someones boot at 140mph is no fun I tell thee.

As much as I would love unrestricted speed limits, that will never happen.

We may, in 10 years time be allowed to travel at 80mph on a motorway at 3am.

That's about it!

what would be more realistic would be speed limits that change depending on the time of day. Being realistic, they could probably remove speed limits all together on some motorways after what 8pm to 5am, when there's very little traffic on the roads. Even on normal roads they could put the speed limit up to 70mph from 60mph during off peak hours.

Not only time of day but make it based on weather like they do in France, ie if it rains the secret signs indicate a lower speed.

Under congested motorway conditions the lower speed 50mph VMS can also aid flow and reduce phantom jams.

Most cars don't have HID head lights though so >80ish on a motorway at night is stupid. I can barely do 65 safely on a motorway in the dead of night but that's because my head lights are just unbelievably crap.

Absolute fail as you dont take into account ££££.

A speed camera does need a wage and will pay for itself. The govt really doesnt care if more police would reduce the number of accidents at that cost.

Youre talking thousands more traffic branch (waste of money) police officers which need as many cars to get them about.
You could never police everyones skill but I have however thought that some roads could use a higher speed limit as they were set at the time for the cars of the time, but theyve advanced greatly.

They are roads not racetracks. Just because a car is capable of160mph doesn't mean it should have a right to travel at that speed.

Unfortunately our roads and motorways are far to congested at peak times to allow an autobahn style speed restrictions.

When road deaths were falling, wasn't technology in cars improving at the same time?

Car technology has improved at least as much in the last 15 years when the death trend started to level off in direct correlation with the introduction and spread of the speed camera...

Have you considered upgrading the bulbs to some Osram Nightbreaker high output variants (circa £20 from powerbulbs) and getting them re-aligned so that the are as high as legally allowed. It can make a suprising difference - as can giving the lenses a good clean.

The above will make night driving much less tiring (my 200sx had poor projection headlamps).

Admittedly now I have HID's and its even better still.

Alternatively, set your alarm to go off 10 minutes earlier so you arrive at your destination at your alloted time without breaking the speed limit. Have you been watching Back To The Future 2, you know with multiple sky lanes for flying cars? Might work then, maybe. So, according to the film, only another 7 years to wait.

I dont see a reason for a lane for every speed... people can use there heads. Empty road you can floor it to your allowed speed if it's safe to do so.

edit: love the idea of a veyron lane though lmao

Veyron Lane has petrol stations and tyre fitters at regular intervals too?

Clarkson said a very silly thing on top gear about this once, about how an aston or something could go at double the speedlimit as it's breaks were doubly effective; which isn't how breaking force works.

I can't remember it exactly but rather than direct proportion, breaking distance increases by something squared... as I said, I can't remember. But at 140mph a car will need much more than double the braking force applied to it to stop in the same distance as it would from 70mph.

Not really relevant as it's a motorway, and you very rarely have to stop, however.

People are generally to stupid to drive, lane discipline at 15mph on roundabouts is scary, most people cant control cars at these speeds let alone 70, or even 170. So the 1st step to higher speed limits is to have an IQ test before your driving test. 120 or over and you can drive, should help congestion too. I think thats fair ;) Then we can have empty motorways and a blanket 100mph speed limit :)
