Interesting RTS article.

Im happy to play for fun and enjoyment even when playing against friends :)

There's more than one kind of fun - relaxed 'playing around' fun, and serious competitive play fun are two examples. It's possible to enjoy both, and some games are more suited to one kind than another.

I think a lot of the points raised by that article apply to online gaming in general, as well as RTSs. I've never played Starcraft to any kind of competitive level, but I used to follow it in CS, and it always succeeded over other shooters for very similar reasons.

For developers to make a properly successful multiplayer game, I think they need to learn to scale back their desire for amazing graphics, and prioritise far more towards a clean, responsive engine. I don't think it even neccesarily has to look bad, just not have effects that either slow the game down, or obstruct your view.

Surely especially against friends. The whole point of playing RTS vs real life friends is to try and stab them in the back/pull off some crazy strategy.
Though isnt it worse when you beat (or get beaten) by a friend due to some random luck you have had, rather than due to good tactics. Now that hurts (getting beaten by skill most people can handle).

Sure there is (different strokes for different folks), but for me its the more relaxed kind of play that i prefer.

Whilst dragging this slightly off the RTS topic you could replace SC with CS and DoW/CoH with TF2. It is actually quite an exact match as the initial release of tf2 failed hard in the competitive scene due to the randomness of a critical shot so mods were created to remove the randomness and the competitions got rolling.

I guess what i was trying to point out is that the article is very accurate to how competitive gaming really is. Unfortunately unless people get in to that scene themselves they will never understand it fully (and as its the internet, if you dont understand it you flame it ).
