interests and hobbies? (job application question)

Be 'honestly' creative

Interacting with media and current affairs (watching TV and thinking about pressing the RED button)
Coordinating binary processes (surfing the net)
Enjoying nature ('manual override' in your bedroom)

i apply for a lot of techie jobs so hobbies that show i know my **** when it comes to computers, hobbies that show ** a team player (sports, outdoor team activities, anythin with a leadership structure).

everythin you put on ** cv should make u look good (without being too obvious)

Uhh I usually put things in that I hope will help rapport build/give me something interesting to talk about that will leave the peron interviewing me something to make me stand out. I only have a little space on my C.V. to use up as I try to keep it tailored to two pages, so not all are always added.

Climbing and Walking - Most recently I partook in a climbing expedition to Spain. I have also led several walking expeditions in the UK.

Sailing - I have now been on several cross channel sailing trips and I am working towards my day skipper sailing qualification.

I am also an active member of the Local Liberal democrats and this year became local party chair.

others that occasionally get added...
Firebreathing
Computers - Building and playing
Youth Work - only now often left off as I am not currently doing any.
Playing Clarinet and Piano

Those are all topics on which I have some short and mildly amusing anecdotes. Things that I always wince at a bit when I am reviewing C.V's - Socialising with friends (uhh yeah I have those too...), Surfing the Net (Umm and you spend hours doing this?), Watching movies , reading (yeah I know reading is a good thing but it doesnt really shout interesting to chat about!)

From my CV:

My CV said:
• I am a member of the University of Birmingham Formula Student team. I am in the Engine group.
• I have a keen interest in Sports cars, and Formula 1 and other forms of motor sport.
• I also enjoy going Go-Karting with the University of Birmingham Motor Racing Club.
• I enjoy going out with friends and general socialising, including pubs, cinema, gigs and clubs.
• I enjoy playing badminton
• I enjoy learning about mechanical parts such as engines and how they work.
• I am also very interested in computers and home entertainment.

I never put interests and hobbies on my CV. Although, it's only aimed at getting a part-time job while at uni :)

If you really want to be "out there" put "Tea parties" and "Midget Wrestling" :p

What's your handycap? ;)

An employer may test you in the interview to find out if you are telling the truth. I wouldnt recommend making things up. :)

Indeed. I got quizzed on my membership of the RSC (Royal Shakespeare Company) years ago. Fortunately, it was genuine, and I could converse with confidence about the last performance, having been there and seen it ..... as had the interviewer. A friend of mine saw it on my CV and thought it looked good. He wasn't so lucky, when he came up against the same partner at the same firm, who was also a member. I got the offer, my mate didn't.

My advice is to have two or three things that provide some interest, and give you some character, but not to make it up. Also, don't put a huge list or employers may wonder if you'll have the time, and energy, to actually do any work.

Moderation in all things.
