Internal or external for backup

External HDD so if there's an electricity surge that kills your entire computer it's still alive.

Occasionally back up to DVD and post them to your parents or somewhere else safe as well in case your house burns down.

Both ways have its advantages and disadvantages.

Just the previous poster said, if its internal, high chance of it getting corrupted or damaged if there is a power surge seeing as it would always be powered on if it is always connected. But at least data transfering is quicker.

External, you have a choice of purchasing a range of different products that meets your needs, or go the DIY approach and get an external enclosure and any hard drive. It's portable, you only switch it on when you need it. Downside is slow transfer rates over USB 2.0 connection though there is also the choice of Firewire or ESATA.

Either way, always have a surge protector just incase. You don't want to lose GB's of your valuable data *coughpr0ncough* :D.
