As subject really - is it possible to connect a standard, internal SATA drive to an eSATA connector on the backplate? Obviously I'd have to find some way of powering the drive outside the case but that aside, are the interfaces compatible or is there something majorly different about the eSATA one?

Yeah, eSATA is just SATA run externally. The cables are subtly different but the protocol etc is just the same.

There are plenty of eSATA caddies that'll give you a power brick etc or you can get PCI backplates that will route a molex connection to the outside world.
